Your 2nd hand car buying experiences.
« on: 22 August 2018, 12:28:12 »

Anybody have any funny experiences or bad experiences when buying a car?.

We have just been talking about when we were buying a 4x4 here in Spain about five years ago. Turned up in this remote village and the daughter said she would take us in the car to talk about it with her dad. He was a sheep farmer. She drove the few miles there at breakneck speed over this washboard surface of a "dirt road". That did it for me as I had noticed a bit of trim missing and showed it wasn't a loved car..

Another time was in the seventies. I needed a new tow car for the rally car/trailer. There was a petrol Rover P5 home converted to diesel  (might have been a BMC 2.2 engine). It stank of diesel, had several batteries strapped together in the boot and wouldn't start. When it did it was the slowest car I have ever driven. base model too as it had hardly any extras. needless to say it got the thumbs down. Bought a Wolsey 16/60 instead.

Suffice to say, he didn't buy it...

Moons ago I went to see a Vectra 2.0 LPG, when we got closer to the Sellers Street it was all blocked off by Police and no answer at All from the Seller, we decided we were close so parked up and went to walk to the House Number, Turns out the Fire Brigade were putting out a Fire Gutted Car at the Sellers Address        ......  Think you can probably guess the rest of it.

Another Occasion, again moons ago, I bought a Ex Plod Omega of the Bay, All Seemed good, arranged to pick and pay, Seller gave me His House Number and Post Code, off I go to Cambridge Area, gets there, ring the Seller, Im outside, 3 mins later Seller calls back, cant see you where are you?, Im out outside number, Blah, Blah, this goes on for about 10 mins, then Seller says, Oh Hang on, what Post Code you got, then the word Bugger, Ive given you my old Address, Ive moved since then Im in High Wychomb  now.  >:( :( :D :o ::)

I put an Offer In and bought another Ex Plod in Aylesbury, 3.0 Manual, Seller wanted rid as it in His Words "Its gutless think its gone in Limp mode or something, just happened one day" I took it for a spin, somethings not right, Throttle feels and seems wiered, popped the Bonnet and noticed the Circlip hand come off at the TB end, drove it back to the Seller and said, do you want the good or bad news?, Seller responded, "Dont care, just want rid, bought another Car now", I paid the money, put a Cable Tie around the Throttle Cable as a temp Fix and drove Off quiet rapidly in the Distance.   ;D :y :)

Went to look at an Omega. Looked reasonable, but seller, clearly a trader running it from home, wouldn't allow test drives, or for me to play with stuff to check it worked, so suspicions were high...   ...and the paperwork wasn't stacking up quite right either...

...then he started showing me a Volvo, that I had no interest in, but he said it was what he specialised in. He showed me the A/C button, and said he buys loads of these buttons, and replaces the blank that non A/C cars have, so everyone thinks it has A/C

Needless to say, I didn't buy it.  A shitty, grim, hellhole of a place beyond the hellhole of Kingston Upon Thames. New Maldon maybe?  Mrs TB always mentions it when I suggest we go out and look at cars, saying it was the most grim, depressing shithole she'd ever been to :D

Unbelievable! He actually showed you the tricks he gets up to and then expects you to buy from him?
That's about as clever as the thieves that broke into Boots some years back and raided the till, etc., and took photos of themselves doing it - then took the film into that same branch of Boots the next day to be developed!

We had that "no test drives" from a dealer in Scotland. We had found a tidy Corsa Sxi (apart from drivers seat collapsed). The cars were so close together you couldn't open the doors properly. We walked away when he said no test drives.

Bought an E34 525i many moons ago. It was three shades of purple, and cost me £130 in man maths.

It also had an aftermarket immobiliser that was a little... enthusiastic. Filled it up at the petrol station ten minutes after purchase, and it wouldn't start. At all. Called the RAC and he spent fifteen minutes merrily chopping the immobiliser out and bypassing it, and it was then perfect*...

*as perfect as a £130 car can be...

Can,t understand anyone buying a motor without test driving it, though i know a lot do. When i bought Goldie i took a chance as dealer said his trade plates were on another car. Just took it down the road and found a private road to try it out. The garage was on the A17 at Gedney in Lincs.

Bought an austin 1100 many years ago for £2 and 10pence he wouldn’t leave it go for £2.
I took it up the forestry burned the half tank of petrol that was in it driving like a madman then had the scrap man to pick it up for a tenner and I kept the battery. What a day!

I bought my Omega blind on ebay, kept it for 11 years and it was the 2nd best car I've had!  :y

The best was a 1980 Ford Cortina estate I bought in Sydney for £200ish, drove it the 10,000 odd miles around Oz and sold it the day before my visa ran out for £300ish!  :y

Drove all the way to central Wales to pick up the Jag XJ12 from a little cottage in the arse end of absolutely nowhereville, which had mouldy walls and a bathroom only accessible via the master bedroom..

The guy was adamant that it was a classic, and hoped very much that I wasn't going to "break it for a kit car, this one is a keeper!". Obviously I lied.

Those who came to my garage will know just how rusty that car was, and how much of a death trap it probably was! Holes in the floorpan, holes in the inner wings, you could see daylight through the front firewall and the car was held together with pigeon shit welding.

Drove lovely, though ;D ;D

 ;D ;D ;D

When I was looking for the Zafira, you'd see countless adverts which looked like "proper traders" but often turn up to a rented industrial estate with no signs or anything.

I think now I would only buy from a decent second hand dealer, Car Giant, large dealers etc. Unless I was spending £1,500 then I'd go proper second hand buying.
