Recommended free HDD image copier suggestions please
« on: 20 October 2018, 21:47:06 »

Replacing a hdd in an old XP system where the disc is gradually failing that I use for several useful local utilities which run poorly under later versions of Windows.

TIA

There all pretty much the same for straight HD to HD, some Free ones start to charge money if you want to other things like Partition cloning or swapping etc , I tend to use EaseUs or HDClone for Disk Cloning, Macruim Reflect is another good free one, also good if like me you do your Bak Ups using Disk Image.

Commerical for Windoze - I use Acronis.

Freebie for most x86 style filesystems, use dd at the device level (could do at partition level if you then rebuild or clone partition table and boot sector)

However, if sectors are bad* then you'll probably need professional recovery.

*bad in that the drive has been unable to remap it successfully.  *ALL* drives have bad sectors.

But I'd always rebuild a Windows desktop, rather than fanny around.

This. However, if you insist on trying it, download the UBCD iso and burn it to a CD, there is a selection of cloning tools on here, you want to try and avoid any that don't give you the option to skip bad sectors.

If the data is really important, I maybe able to help, drop me a PM. If you are thinking of this option, the more you do with drive (copy/clone/use), the higher the chance of losing data.

I very recently (last week) changed my HD (not SSD). I needed it to be bootable and either cheap or free. I used Clonzilla. Clumsy as hell. But it works fine, providing you do exactly as told.
