A question for lorryists
« on: 08 January 2019, 17:36:06 »

We have a place around here called mobile mini, which transports containers around on the back of trucks. They sometimes put two on a flatbed, with one of them sticking way over the back of the bed. As you come out of Asda, there are a set of lights with two, narrow lanes, the right hand one of which is a filter to turn right. As the lorry turns right, the rear container comes right across the left hand lane, it must be at least three or four metres behind the rear wheel. Is this legal?

Yup.  ;)

The 26t frosty box I drove until this week had a good 10ft overhang with the rear axle lifted... Very easy to wipe out a whole pavement of idle yoofs  :D

Basically, one of the reasons other road users get frustrated with trucks, especially odd shaped/sized ones, is that they fail to appreciate the space that they need to make turns and negotiate junctions.

This is also why you need to take an enhanced driving test in order to drive them.

A recommended read if you want to gain a clearer picture of what's what...

From memory, loads which are abnormally wide or long should have marker boards to make people aware of the fact.
Its been a long time since I was kind of involved in that sort of thing, so things may have changed.

Check out the overhang on this...

I know that what you're describing is probably two small containers on a rigid flatbed, which generally overhang the bed by three or four feet rather than the overhang being the truck itself, but these are well within size limits ;)

The overhang on the ones I'm talking about is about 6-8ft, but nothing like the one in the pic.

So if the load slides to the rear under searing acceleration you end up popping a wheelie. :D
