Oil Filters?

Got sold the wrong one today by vx dealer  >:(
I didnt notice at the time coz i was buying quite a few bits.

Still used it....coz i couldnt be bothered to take it back

Should have been sold 93156954 @ £4.09 +vat retail
What i was sold was 93178952 @ £2.91+ vat retail

Both are metal canister type.....but the cheaper one has LONG LIFE  :o printed on it.

Whats the difference.....anyone know? and does it matter?  :-/

The Long Life one doesn't need to be kept in the fridge. ;D

Make sure it's got the correct thread on it. Otherwise, it may fall off and unless you shut it down very quickly it's going to cause damage. It'll cause a mess whatever happens. If it screwed in OK and tightened up it SHOULD be OK.

Other than that the differences are whether it has a bypass valve (doesn't really come into it if you change it before it clogs up!) and the size and shape of the filter. If it physically fits and the thread is the same (sometimes stamped into the inside surface next to the threaded hole) I'd say it'll be fine.

If it came from a VX dealer it'd be unlikely to have a different thread IMO. They hopefully standardise on one size.

The long life ones have a restricted oil flow, only 10% of the oil gets filtered, hence the long life.

In the short term, this will cause major long lasting  damage to the Omega 2.2 engines.

On tests, it caused oil starvation to the cam shaft causing the engine to blow after only a few hundred miles.

On a serious note, some filters have two valves, i.e. apart from the by-pass valve they also have a non-return valve that is meant to prevent the oil from dripping back into the sump when the engine is switched-off. This ensures that the filter is full of oil when the engine is started from cold next time. Not sure if this is relevant to the issue at hand, info supplied for general knowledge....
