Vauxhalls Worst Attempt At A Car
« on: 16 July 2009, 07:51:04 »

Various threads of best and worst cars.
inc this one http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/YaBB.pl?num=1247652194/all

It got me to thinking what do we consider to be  the worst of vauxhalls attempt at car buildind.

At the moment (Unless reminded otherwise) I think the Belmont  was the worst in my eyes.

I have to disagree with you skruntie, we had 3 Belmonts and 2 of them being GLSi model which had the Astra GTE engine and box and was quite quick for the time. Also they where allways in so much better condition than the GTE's of the time as they where not ragged as much. And with the Irmscher rear spoiler they looked good.

The worst looking car at the moment has to be the Agila.

You were very lucky then GD.  The early 1970s Viva's all disappeared very quickly and it is now very rare to see one, unlike contemporary Ford Escorts that are still going around.

The ones I used to see, that were only 5 years old, would have rust spots in the wings, doors, boot lid, bonnet, etc, etc, that would very quickly develop into terminal holes :D :D ;)

In defence of Vauxhall on this one, it was all down to the very lazy british worker on the production line for all the rust on Vauxhall's in those days.  >:(

I will say no more

Yes i have to agree on the viva, well the engines anyway. I have lot count of the number of engine changes that i have done because they were worn out at 45,000 miles.

To be fair to the Viva (of which I have several) you can't get new panels for them now, unlike escorts.
So it looks like less escorts rusted away, but more have been restored. Ford care about heritage, Vauxhall don't  :'(

From new the fords rusted just as much, 70's quality was poor all round.
And the engines generally last ok if the oil is changed like clockwork  :)

the victor FD was a rust bucket also, front wings & flitch plates[inner wings] rear arches was another rust trap, the ohc lump used to leak oil from the cam carrier, the front screen was one of the first attempts at a bonded screen which used to leak like a teabag, a shame really as they were a nice drive ;)

Oh crikey, loads to choose from.

first of the Belmonts (MKII Astra). Probably the only car I've owned that I truely hated.

Meriva. What were they thinking. Then putting a 1.4 petrol engine in it.

Vectra-B - like the Focus, only deemed good because its predecessor was so poor (or old in Vx's case_

Vectra-C - much like above. Vectra-C is OK with less powerful engines in all fairness.

Nova Saloon. Why?

Any chance you could reduce the size of your avatar (see forum guidelines at top of each section for maximum sizes).

Doesn't bother me personally, but some deranged souls are under some (incorrect) illusion that Firefox etc is more secure, and Firefox cannot deal with avatars larger than our forum guidelines say :y

Also, in the rush to always have the latest and greatest, some people are using IE8 which also struggles with larger avatars.

Cheers
