X5s get proper pissy when you connect jump leads/booster pack directly to the battery...

The inevitable voltage surge fries the supply board in a manner impressive enough to worry Mrs TB ;D

Might be half the problem  :-\

I honestly think reports of frying the IBM (Intelligent Battery Monitor) are over stated.. let's put it this way - if 18V out of a dodgy alternator didn't fry the one in my last E64, 14.7V out of a charger isn't going to..

Oh - and Battery Registration just resets the learned charge profiles and stores the mileage of the battery replacement into the ECU ;) Which I'd do, if I could find the damned option in my tool (which is all in German ;D). It's more important to either replace the battery with the same capacity (which I did - 110Ah!) or make sure you re-code the vehicle option list to accommodate the new battery size if it's either lower or of a different type (swapping from AGM to lead acid or vice versa) as over-charging an AGM will kill it pronto.

I'm no stranger to NCSExpert etc ;D

Anyhow .. all fixed.

I thumped the roof.

A lot.

Basically (which became obvious when I looked at the sensor readings), they are apparently prone to one of the hall effect sensors getting a bit "sticky" and then it thinks the roof isn't fully up - and when it thinks that, it will let you roll the windows down but not up again. Which has the neat effect of making a slightly annoying fault (roof stuck up) a very annoying fault (windows stuck down)! FFS, BMW.

Anyway I literally just beat on the roof to rattle the sensor and now it's fine again - roof goes up & down normally. I just need to get in there now and clean & lubricate the slider on the sensor to make sure it doesn't get stuck again  :y

Stupid cars...

Have seen several fried units on the X5... Caused by TrafPol units doing inappropriate things with jump leads... Namely either jumpstarting other people's cars directly from the battery or leaving everything switched on except the run lock and then jumping straight to the battery without turning everything off first ;D

Stupid German automotive "engineers" cars...

FTFY.. Jesus! Batteries fail. People jump start cars or shove a new battery in when that happens. Normal cars just work when you do that. A car that can't deal with it is not fit for purpose.  ::)

Cars are too clever for their own good.. to be fair, I think the roof failure was coincidental to the battery failure and more likely temperature and water related than anything else (I had noticed that the car was very damp inside with condensation on the inside of the windscreen .. I'd been meaning to dry it out). You only need to futz with the battery coding if you fit a different battery to the one BMW intended to be in there ;) (or if you really want the ECU to know what mileage you changed the battery at..)

You can't say that!! I'm sure that some over qualified engineer in Munich has a large file justifying why some pointless feature is more valuable than a robust electrical system. That, or the file contains compromising photos to ensure he gets his way.

Replaced one of the post-cat lamdbas. PITA to get it out, but a mixture of ATF, acetone, heat and impact wrench did it in the end. :y

EML is a fail now, IIRC, and given that the heater in the sensor was open circuit, it didn't take that long for the ECU to realise that it was shot following a reset. ::)
