Attention Bikers!
« on: 02 September 2006, 20:39:29 »

It seems there are several bikers or ex-bikers in our midst.

I had a short biking career which was prematurely cut short when I got married for the first time.

Lets see who you are and what you've had/got.

I'll start.

1979  Yamaha FS1E.  Learnt to ride on this.

1979  Suzuki AP50.  Learnt how engines (?) work by stripping it several times.  Stripped/repainted.

1980  Yamaha RD250.  Stripped to the bone.  Repainted/rebuilt.

1981  Yamaha RD400.  Wonderful 2 stroke with actual low down torque.

1982-1986  Suzuki GS550E.  My pride and joy for years.  Stripped/ rebuilt.  Took the future Mrs Hillper on this wearing short skirt and winklepickers.  (Can't remember what she was wearing).

1984  Suzuki RG500 Gamma.  100bhp in a feather light frame.  Fastest, scariest thing I've ever encountered.  That soon had to go.

1986  Got married and that was the end of my biking career.

I really want to start a bike project, but it's going to have to wait until I move next April.

I'd like to rebuild a 1983 Suzuki GS1000.  The bike I never quite owned.  Only 85bhp and questionable handling, but I want one!

I love the bikes from the 80's, especially the 2 strokes.

97 Yamaha TDM 850
After not riding for 20 years I didn't want a really fast bike. 135 top is fast enough for the bike & a ton is more than fast enough for me. Besides, a lot of the bikes I sat on had my knees up around my ears - & I'm only 6'

PS have you seen the price of fizzys on eBay? :o

That brought the ol' farts out!

All the bikes I owned are worth a fortune now.  Especially the RG500.

I borrowed a TDM850 for a while.  Huuuge great thing!  Lovely low down torque.

I have a BMW R100RT used daily for the commute to work in London. Can't beat the old air cooled boxer, loads of spares, no chain to adjust everything very simple.

Only got my licence a few years ago so I've only had one bike (bought it before I passed!). It was a 2001 Suzuki SV650S, cracking bike with a very torquey V-twin and a great sound off it. Not the most powerful bike out there but it could still do 0-100 in 8 seconds or so 8-).

Sold it because I planned on buying a 2003 GSX-R 1000, guy selling was 200 miles from me and was totally unaccomodating in terms of arranging times for me to come down, eventually I got p1ssed off with him and pulled the plug on the purchase. So currently bike-less, probably get something next spring.

SV650 is a great first big bike. Comfy, easy to ride, torquey motor, and doesn't have that (scary if you're not experienced) power surge that sports bikes get in the power band...

Bang on! Absolutely perfect as a stepping stone to silly stuff. You just cannot fault them, cracking little bike.

a FS1E, this was bored to within an inch of its life and had a slight buckle on the front wheel.... when you got to 'hairy speeds' it would vibrate like mad..

RD125 then a RD250, then a RD400, then a CBR600, this was the end of my biking career, the bus drivers in Bristol had just been told to share the bus lane with bikers, and they were not happy, 4 times i was knocked off my bike by bus drivers who would pull out and 'clip' my rear wheel, this would send me spinning off.

Father in law is big into his bikes, only moto guzzis though, he has a Le Mans, Daytona and a new one, Grizo, i think

I started in 1982 with a Lambretta Li 150 YLG 30J, them used that as a deposit on a brand new Vespa P200E GTU 372X. I then got a job in Manchester and travelled between Chester and Manchester and the scooter wasn't the best on the motorway so I got a Honda 250N Superdream (dont laugh) I then passed my car test and the bike went. Then about 4 years ago I bought a restored Yamaha RD 400E in racing yellow it was a bike I had wanted as a kid and loved it but the wife got sick of me vanishing on a Sunday and I was made an offer I coudnt refuse so 18 months ago I sold it. I have just started looking for a good GPZ 900R which I will probably buy in the winter again its a bike I always wanted as a kid

Nice to see a couple of mentions for the ol' RD400.

Still wish I'd kept  the RG500 though.  Throtlle response as follows:

Nothing.....nothing.......nothing........15bhp.......17bhp..100bhp......sky......underpants......nothing.... next gear!
