3.0 Oil Filter ( NOT the nice easy spin-on one!!)
« on: 11 August 2006, 21:41:02 »

Just done an oil change after 5500 ish miles as is my want.     Last time I carefully, as usual, torqued the filter holder.   This time, trying to undo it, the whole caboodle started turning!   As I was lying on my back underneath this heavy beast of a car, I turned it back to where it had been and didn't change the filter (Well, I WAS tired & hungover, and didn't know what was going to happen!)  Does anyone know if the whole unit will come off and be separable once it's off?    (Difficult in that position to see if there's room to take the whole thing off, and how sturdy the casing is!)

Its not easy, the best bet is to use a strap wrench to hold the body whilst trying to remove the cap.....the problem is that there is a piece of casting that tends to catch the oil cooler pipes.

Once the cap is off its worth tightening the internal threaded assembly to stop it happening again (there is a hex inside the filler that tightens the body to the block).

Ta, I had a feeling as I was lying there that it wouldn't be easy!   All I need is a high-lift and four arms.   Ain't it a pain when an easy routine job suddenly goes tits-up!

IIRC, a 12mm hex bit is required to tighten up the bolt which fastens the outer casing onto the block. Tightening torque is 45 Nm / 33 lbf. ft.

I had to leave my miggy on axle stands overnight when it happened to me  ::)
