I completed a cambelt change and water pump replacement yesterday and was very pleased with myself. Today I have the alternator light showing, I have checked the connections and they seem okay. When I did the work I didnt disconnect the battery and the alternator got spashed by the cooling water when i disconnected the radiator hose. Could this be why I have now got a light showing. can I reset the fault code?
car is a 2.5cd 1996
now updated, i was wrong in saying it was the alternator light.
I'm getting all flustered now.

yes its the engine electronics light. I think I was wrong in assuming it was the alternator light.

Try doing the paperclip test if this is the case to read the fault codes I am guessing yours isn't the facelift model.

Possibly forgotten to plug in on of the connectors to knock sensor 1, egr, or front multiram.
If its an older car, a paperclip test will tell you which one....

Yep, connector not in properly, fault codes will help to pin point it.
Favourites are:
MAF
Air Temp
Front multiram
Knock sensor 1
EGR......

opps, yes forgot about those 2 going to intake stuff - maf and air temp

tried the paper clip test but couldnt get the light to flash. although the info says it should. bridged out A+b no joy. have I blown something?

You short out pins 4or5 and 6 in the connector in the fuse box under the steering wheel.
The light should flash with the ignition on starting with *-** *-** *-*8 to indicate 12 as the start of code....then it will repeat each fault code three times and finaly falsh 12 again 3 times to indicate end of codes

Under the steering column is a cover to the fuses and a dignostic port on the left side.
It is vertically mounted and has 16 pins.
Pin 1 is top right.
Pin 2 is below, then pin 3 & 4 etc.
Insert a paper clip or length of wire into pins 4 & 6.
Turn on ignition (start engine if you prefer, it will do no harm and will avoid spurious codes 19's)
As Mark says you will get a code 12 flashing 3 times in a row.
A code 12 is flash (pause) flash flash.
Once this has repeated then there will be a pause and then another code
An example:
flash (pause) 4 flashes (pause) 5 flashes = 145
make a note of the codes and post up the result. As Mark said, it will be a sensor not plugged back in (we all have done it!) :)

I must have an earlier car as my diagnostic point is 10 pin and mounted at the rear of the engine bay, had another go at trying to get the codes to flash but no joy.
I definately must have buggered something up by not disconnecting the battery. all plugs are in with good contact.

So there is no diagnostic socket in left hadn half of the fuse box under the steering wheel?
Is the plug you are using on the drivers side strut......

Sounds like you are trying to plug into the cruise loom!
Use the diag socket in fusebox under steering wheel ;)

yes it is, now I am confused. It is in the same place and the same type as on my carlton so assumed that was it. will have a look in the fuse box wheel sunday.

Lol....wrong plug....all Omegas use the fuse box diag plug (with the possible exception of the 2.0 8V)

I don't know, but I would have thought the 8v would still use a similar loom and setup?

I have now found the diagnosis socket and it is indeed in the fuse box. (definately in the engine compartment for the carlton)
The fault code is 69 which according to the chart in front of me is the air flow temperature unit reading low volts. Have checked and rechecked the connections but cannot see how I could have caused the fault light to appear. My next thought is on removing the air flow pipe I must have buggered up the sensor, but I cant see how as it was enclosed in the pipework.

Have you put the air temp sensor connector onto the front multiram connetor and vice versa (both are two pin plugs)

Oh dear I am a silly billy,run the cables a different way to original and ended up with the connectors wrong, all ok now.
