I'd been looking around at something to replace the Skoda, as I think we've previously discussed.. anyway, I started off looking at Mini Clubmans (Clubmen?) as I quite like driving her indoors' Cooper S, then as I couldn't find the "unicorn" car started looking at other things..

Things that can tow a reasonable weight, have a decent boot etc.

Looked at E60 Touring - nice, mostly 2.0 dervs, did see one very nice red car but it sold before I could get there.
Looked at pickups as I miss the Ranger, but without paying 4x my budget you're looking at very old examples with interstellar mileage
Looked at Touaregs..

..found myself looking at the V10 TDI Touaregs
..decided I maybe wanted one I found not too far away, but wasn't convinced due to the hideous economy figures
..but that one broke down before I could get there and is no longer available

Because I never got to look at it, I now desperately want it

Good call, actually - I like those in a perverse kind of way, should go and have a look at one. A shame we didn't get the same range of engines as the US, though, because the 5.6 V8 would have been nice

Been looking at these myself as an eventual replacement for my estate (my sister has a G Sport). Most current estate cars have a massive slope on the tailgate, negating the whole point of owning an estate car. I always seem to need the load space of my estate, whether it be taking my petrol mower over my parents so that I don't have to use their stupid little electric thing, or picking up white goods (a washing machine/tumble dryer fits in the boot with the rear seats still up  ), building materials, furniture etc for the kids. A three metre worktop fits in an Omega Estate, as does an awful lot of other stuff, including a double bed mattress. I just could not go back to a saloon as I would miss the space. I already have a coupe, which even if an item fits in the boot, you can't get it through the opening. 
I considered a Skoda Superb Sportline Estate but am now swaying towards a Transit Custom Sport. They are silly money though, as in rediculously expensive for the M Sport or MS-RT, or any sport model for that matter.
Vans are the new posh car, and they ain't cheap. Just need to upgrade the locks if going down the Transit route.

I like pickup trucks, especially the new Ford one, but we found the Navara Double Cab bed too short to be of much use. The Mountain Top reduced the height so it made it very difficult to actually get anything large in it and we didn't want to stick a Truckman Top on it. Put all of your shopping bags in the bed and then play pick-n-mix when you get home.

Yeah - the ridonkulous load space is the one thing I miss about the Omega; ok, and maybe the comfort. Not fixing it every weekend, though

Vans are the new posh car, and they ain't cheap. Just need to upgrade the locks if going down the Transit route. 

They really are - see Ranger et al, too.. your concerns over shopping etc and the lack of practical load space are valid - the bed is really short on the Ranger (double cab) too and you can't "through load" like you can with a car. Don't get me wrong, I still miss mine dearly and I'd have another in a heartbeat and live with the impracticalities if I had ~£25k spare.

The issue with the Transit is they are a woefully screwed together and noisy ride, not great for leisurely trips, the Ranger is just a horrible handling pickup, not for anybody who actually likes to push on and enjoy the drive. But both are cart spring setups and designed for lugging loads and not general use.

Right on both counts. Although I do know of people who imported US spec SRT towbars and used them here. However to my mind if you're going to do that you may as well not bother paying for insurance, seeing as they wouldn't cover you anyway.

The limited OTOH is a fairly common tow vehicle and the likes of PF Jones will sell you a type approved kit.

They reminded me of an old Mk2 Escort (light bottom and boat like), far from suitable for the modern world (maybe I am spoiled now!), probably ideal for a hairy ass builder with a load of tat thrown on the back.

The issue with the Transit is they are a woefully screwed together and noisy ride, not great for leisurely trips, the Ranger is just a horrible handling pickup, not for anybody who actually likes to push on and enjoy the drive. But both are cart spring setups and designed for lugging loads and not general use.

I loved the tranny I had at work for a few years, but it did need to be fully laden (actually overweight, as I pointed out to my boss on numerous occasions, despite having skipped most of the stupid heavy shit they wanted us to carry) to handle - empty, nigh on impossible to drive it properly quick without constantly spinning it.

I loved the way the traffic just parted as a big grey tranny comes barrelling towards them.

True - although this is entirely personal opinion, I think they are far uglier unfortunately.. like every-branch-on-the-way-down ugly and the Toerag is no looker!

There are "better" looking V10 Toerags on 'trader, but they're in places like Warrington & Darlington

Henry - does yours have the self levelling uppy downy suspension? I'm not sure if they all do or not.. if it does, does it "sigh" and sit back down when you turn the ignition off and lock the car?

Cayenne also has some pretty full on reliability issues ranging from the auto box through the V8 alloy pipe work to the headlight washers.......and not cheap to put right either.

Sounds like the 'pipe of doom' on the N62 that runs through the centre of the V and fills your engine with coolant when* it fails.. (also known for valve stem seal failures, of course)

To be fair, for a 9yr old car the miles aren't that outrageous, 35,000 p.a. is eminently achievable just commuting.

Makes you wonder what made him (or her) get rid of it, I mean, I'm all for getting rid when cars get a bit too leggy, but in their position I'd be tempted to press on and at least hit the half million.
