Had new rear tyres a couple of weeks ago. Is it the rears which haven’t been balanced properly? Or the fronts?

Did you have the problem before? If not, then likely to be your new tyres.
Out of balance fronts tends to show through the steering wheel, out of balance rears tend to shake the car

Usually, if the rear wheels haven't been balanced properly, or there is a bulge in the rear tyres, it can be felt through the seat of your pants, or by putting you hand on the transmission tunnel behind the front seats. You also will see the passenger seat back shaking.
Fronts are the usual symptom of steering wheel shake, or in worse cases, the dash shakes.
50mph is the optimum speed where minor wheel imbalance issues usually show themselves.

Can you drive through it/ If it's wheel imbalance, it usually stops after about 70-80mph!

In an Omega, 45mph and 85mph seem to be the 2 points where wheel balancing issues show up IME.
As other stated, if its steering wheel shake, its fronts, if your ass is shaking, its rears

I start wondering how much duress the tyres are going through at that point, and wonder what would happen if one blew out. A pansy, I know. ::)

Well I can tell you what happened when one blew out at 125mph on a Cavalier 1-8 SRi quiet a few years back. :(
