Trans fluid drip
« on: 03 January 2009, 14:16:55 »

Just saw a few drips of what I think is trans fluid on my garage floor after an overnight park.  Saw one drip about a month ago (and ignored it).

How is this likely to be leaking?  Where from?  What are the possible fixes?

Thanks for the guidance.

All depends where you can see the drop from when 1) look under car- if between engine and gearbox maybe the torque convertor seal; £28 for seal at vauxhall as done this recently for koliberK on forum, 4 hour job. 2) maybe lucky and just one of the sump gaskets gone? may just need tightening up slightly.

as robsey says with the g/box but might want to also check power steering pipes/pump, the oil seal for torque converter is only £8-50 inc postage [approx]from JPAT as members get a discount, look for info in parts. :y

If torque convertor seal gone would you not get ATF in "bell housing" - if so remove rubber bung on bottom and you should feel signs of fluid in there.

If not gaskets leaking only other places where ATF could leak from are - either output shaft seal at rear of gearbox or oil cooler pipework.

Can't think of any more.

Steve take a look underneath, jack the car up and take a look for fluid splatter.

Currently working on changing the drive flange seal on my transmission, absolute bugger getting the old one off  >:(

I had a fluid leak on my old 2.0 auto estate that I could not trace for ages.  Eventually I discovered that it came from the small oil seal on the selector switch.

It looked such a sod to get at so I just lived with it, putting a bowl under the car if it stood for a few days in the garage to catch the drips and topping up every 6 months.

Hi
Are you sure its the transmission, also check oil pressure switch, the small oil seal goes causing oil to leak down the switch and then sprayed back when driving. :)

Its been too cold (for me anyway) to crawl about underneath.  Its not engine oil - different colour and taste (why did I do that  :-X)

Please make sure its auto fluid as I replaced all the gaskets/filters and oil only to see the drip again.

Turned out to be coolant leaking from the heat exchanger leaking through the aircon drain pipe and down the gearbox...
