When change serpentine belt
« on: 06 January 2009, 20:58:06 »

On my 3.2V6 (~69k miles) I've never changed the the serpentine belt.  What is expected lifetime of this?

Thanks, Steve

oh, nobody said 40k or 4 years. is that just the cam belt then?

and nobody is worried about the belt taking out/damaging other components? :-/

Auxiliary belt has to be removed in order to change the cam belt, so it is best to change it when changing cam belt...

also, tensioner (for the auxiliary belt) is best to be changed at the same time, because they tend to fail, not the belt.

Last weekend tensioner on my omega failed...quite nasty, because auxiliary belt powers the water pump -> no belt means overheating, so if your belt fails, you have to turn the engine of

That's what I thought when I did my water pump, only thing was, I did it when Vauxhall were shut & Halfords didn't even list a 'fan' belt for a V6 with air con. :( That's why I now have a new belt in the boot! ..... just in case.  ;)

The cambelt & guides were changed at 40K miles - AFAIK the serpentine belt wasn't, nor the tensioner.  Its working hard in this weather (heated seat, heated window lighting etc).

I don't know if I should change it as a precaution or if I'm being overly concerned?

I think a spammer generated some posts that were later removed.

I would take a look at the belt for condition if you're concerned, but you're due a cam belt change in 11k miles anyway, so unless it's hanging by a thread I would change it then. After 80k it'll be about ready, IME.
