Just like during the Cold War, this message would just be telling the truth. Hopefully no one is sent any message at all in the event, and instead everything just happens very quickly.

It wouldn't be down to the Networks to send this out as various Gov Depts have a Gateway into the Networks as part of their Public Emergency Alerts Program.

Cell broadcast only going to work if all handsets have it turned on and the correct 'channel number' selected

If you knew anything about nuclear blasts you would realise the dangle berries you have written. :(
If the Soviets had attacked all of the main UK targets on its list, they would have killed 20-30% of the UK population. With a 1 megaton bomb those within the inner blast radius of about a 1.5 miles would all die whether they were in a shelter or not. The next blast ring of 5 miles will cause burns to any skin facing the blast and serious injuries and death from the high speed blast winds and debris, those in underground shelters would survive. Beyond this the danger and wind speed decreases with distance. SALT treaties means that the Russians & Americans have far fewer warheads and the Russians will need to be very selective in the number of targets they can hit if it involves all NATO countries. Both sides have moved away from very large bombs where it is better to carry a cluster of smaller independently targeted warheads. If you have an underground shelter more than 1.5miles from the blast with a good stock of food, water & iodine tablets (ideally at least 1-2 months so the worst of the short life radiation has decayed), before you go above ground, then do as your told by the government and military and civil defence forces. :y :y :y

How long any nuclear winter would last are unknown but more recent research suggest that it will be much, much shorter than the 1950's doomsday predictions. Ukrainians that have moved back into the Chernobyl exclusion zone and are farming their land, picking and eating their crops, animals, keeping milk cows etc. and especially eating wild mushrooms (gathering autumn wild mushrooms is a big cultural thing in Ukraine) that can be very, very high in radiation from contaminated soil and these people are dying from old age rather than any higher rates of cancer. So if our generation survive the initial blast in an underground shelter, then you will almost certainly die of old age rather than the effects of the nuclear attack. :y :y :y

In the good old early days of the cold war, the nukes was larger due to the inaccuracy of the delivery systems.
A warhead was made with a high yield because the CEP was measured in hundreds of meters.
Nowadays, these things can be popped through letter box if needed hence the much smaller yield weapons available today ;)
Now were is my old "Survive to fight" manual :D :D

No, not at all.
Can you be assured that Putin, who is known to have developed nuclear weapons with a far wider destructive affect when denoting and is the leader of the country who built the (then) World's biggest bomb, the Tzar, does not possess weapons far more powerful than in the Cold War? Are you certain that Iran and North Korea haven't developed their nuclear weapons to a level that will be far more destructive than ever known before? The Cold War did end almost 30 years ago so there has been much time for development in the destructive capacity of nukes. After all, what power throughout World history has ever limited the force of their weaponry? It just does not happen!
The answer is "no", as no international inspections of any worth have been carried out in these countries; Putin for example will block every attempt for outsiders to see their new range of nuclear weapons. We are in, once again, a World of tremendous uncertainty. We are in a situation where a number of countries could combine their forces, unlike during the Cold War when we knew it would 'just' be between the CCCP and the USA. Then at least we knew we were dealing with leaders who, eventually, recognised MAD. Can the same be said of the current fanatical World leaders?
There are no guarantees now that someone won't push 'that' button and send the most powerful nuclear weapons into us. ;)

Quite a few of my wife's family and friends got this message and it upset them quite a lot. Back in November air-raid sirens were re-enabled due to the actions of N Korea and this was publicised widely. Hawaii is a of huge strategic importance to the US military, not just the Navy capabilities but also other intelligence operations. So tensions were already high.
It seems, from what I have read, that an employee pressed the wrong option choosing 'Missile Alert' rather than 'Test Missile Alert'. For such a weak failsafe to be present in uch an important alerting system is frankly quite incredible. I would have expected a more robust control than one which can be as simple as A or B (ie if a genuine alert then confirm by typing the following code) Less chance of human error in that case.

I was amazed that parts of it was still been used on the hush hush more then 10 years after the wall had come down.
The old coffin dodger who does the tour really knows his stuff and is well worth taking the time to listen to what he has to say :y
Same here sadly but I cant see a full scale kick off like I was expecting back in the mid / late 80's when I was doing my bit out in sausage land :y
As far as we was concerned, we would have maybe 3 or 4 days before we were all gassed or topping up our tan via a nice instant bucket of sunshine ;D ;D
I suppose that's why we all had such a "work hard, play even harder" attitude :-X :-X :D :D

Yes indeed, and that may have been one thing subconsciously behind the 80's culture of earning as much money as you can, and than splashing it out! I remember my colleagues and I often discussing how we could be dead tomorrow (due to the CCCP), with my father always stating "It is better to be red than dead" !!! :o :o :D
