General Car Chat / How to fix Terry Pagets Vectra...

1. Buy these... https://www.skandix.de/en/spare-parts/interior-temperature/heater/heat-exchanger/clip-heat-exchanger-service-kit/1042870/

2. Fit them.

3. Find something else to worry about.

If you would rather try your second nearest VX dealer, then you need part number 93171800.

Test Zone / Diffences between vented/non vented rear brakes...
« on: 17 August 2020, 14:45:54 »
https://photos.app.goo.gl/m8GbQsh38K6e6cR38

Solid rear discs, 286x12mm, have a fixed caliper in two halves and are marked 40. These are available new.

Vented rear discs, 286x29mm, have a fixed caliper in two halves with an extra 8mm section fitted between the two halves and are marked 42. These are not available new.

The only differences are: piston diameter, the extra section and longer bolts securing the two halves together.

A new solid caliper can, in theory, be adapted to replace a rust damaged vented one by splitting the calipers and using the bolts and inserts from the vented caliper. Replacing the seals between each part is advised as they can harden and become brittle.

General Discussion Area / What is wrong with people?

Apparently the Government is completely wrong for acting slowly at the start of the Batflu Incident, and according to 'That obnoxious bint at the Beeb' nothing else matters beyond Boris being shot. Metaphorically or otherwise.

Now Varche* has taken fresh Batflu back to Spain causing a sudden spike, the Government took a mere 24 hours to reintroduce 14 day isolation for anyone returning from Spain. Apparently this response is too quick as it doesn't allow people to come home from their holidays before todays quarantine imposition...

WTF? they went over there in the full knowledge that such a possibility might happen ::)

*Obviously not actually Varches fault.

Right, garage ceiling is down.  :D

Before it gets replaced, I want to take the opportunity to sort the wiring for shower room and utility additions within the garage.

I know where the stud walls/doors are going to be and the plumbing is basically in place. Wish to add a couple of sockets for the utility room (to replace an existing extension cord for the washer and dryer... Currently share a plug on the opposite wall), and a separate light for the utility and shower room (with extractor).

1. Is it acceptable to run spurs from the lighting and 13A rings, or better to extend the rings to include the new sockets/lights?

2. Also want to use the long since redundant 30A shower feed as an industrial socket in the garage. It has its own breaker switch in the fusebox. Would one of  Theses... suffice?

General Discussion Area / Random computer set up question...
« on: 20 June 2020, 19:49:58 »
Once upon a time, connecting a monitor to a desktop involved a single plug with screws...

Now faced with a choice...

1. Traditional VGA
2. USB 3.0
3. HDMI
4. Optical/Digital?

Both monitor and desktop support all of the above. Both brand new and same brand so the question is really...

Which one to use? (and why. If it helps)

As above,

Do they have any residual value?

Currently fitted with 2 x 4GB DDR2 RAM  and a Western Digital 2.0TB SATA Hard Drive with a 64MB Cache

Originally rebuilt with Windows 8 Pro, but upgraded to Windows 10 when they were giving it away :-X

Believe that it has been cleaned back to the bare bones.

Well, it's just grown legs...

When the house was built, they put a double skin in as the garage ceiling, and being the late '50s/early '60s, they obviously felt that 1/4" asbestos board was the best way to do this.

Fast forward to the early '90s and the garage was shortened to create some more space in the new kitchen extension. Of course, the left the asbestos in place.

Fast forward to now. The garage ceiling needs to be removed, partly because it's asbestos, and partly to ensure that the water hasn't caused further, hidden damage to the joists etc as it had soaked down over time.

Had the news today, that they want to remove ALL the asbestos rather than simply the current garage ceiling, so they now want to remove the end wall in order to get it down where it encroaches into the kitchen. So the kitchen has to be cleared along with the all the plumbing including gas and much of the wiring as it's all in/through that wall.

All to avoid cutting the asbestos at the wall...

Still, at least it's not raining. ::)
