General Car Chat / Set myself on fire a bit
« on: 13 July 2022, 12:43:23 »
So. Doing a quick and dirty wheel refurb. Aerosol and a plastic can gun. Merrily spraying the inner barrel and what I assume was a static shock set light to the paint and propellant. Nice little fireball to wake me up.

Good thing I was stood else LittleGK would be a bit crispier than ideal. As it is, I'm going to save money on my fortnightly leg wax...! :D

Omega General Help / Removing the auxiliary coolant pump, V6
« on: 29 June 2022, 11:34:18 »
So, as usual, two steps forward, one giant leap back.

Thought I'd disassemble the auxiliary pump under the coolant tank and clean it out, as it was clearly filled with sludge (rest of the system has been flushed as I've gone on, thank goodness).

As I did so I found that the internals were less complete than I would have liked. Like, completely broken and came out in bits...

Looking online it seems I either pay £40 for an unknown used one from Germany... or £60 for a new one.

Instead - reading up, I can live without it, I never use the car enough to need to run the heater without the engine on... so I'm thinking of bypassing it entirely. New length of hose from the bulkhead... to... where? :)

General Discussion Area / Cramped ambulances

Report from the Bibble that larger members of staff are struggling to fit in new ambos.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-cambridgeshire-61847310

I sympathise entirely with them, as a "large" chap whose irregular proportions continue to baffle the most learned of scholars. I have a favoured Traaaaaaansit at work because the seat moves 3 inches further back than the others, and it makes it much nicer for a 12 hour shift. Our older Iveco battle bus is much more cramped (but RWD, so more fun).

However. People rrapping their hands and fingers in the sliding door... That's not the ambulances fault. That's just been tacked on to make them sound even worse. Or do our green clad chums have an exemption for "don't put your fingers where you wouldn't put your cock" (medical needs notwithstanding)?

I feel I should recognise this but I don't. Looks like it's from the NS of the engine bay. I'm certain I haven't destroyed it but it looks like it once was connected but has been broken for a while.

Any light throwing would be appreciated...

I got these from Tunnie about a year ago as a set, I've used the rears but the fronts are as new (possibly a bit of surface rust, but they've never been fitted to a car). I don't need them so I'd rather pass on to someone who can use them.

Free to collect from Teesside.

Omega General Help / Auto V6 radiator onto a manual car

Omega General Help / Rear ABS sensor wiring
« on: 01 June 2022, 12:14:51 »
Imagine a world... where a northern idiot is rebuilding an old Omega.

Now imagine he's putting the diff back in, with the ABS sensors.

And now imagine he didn't tag the cables (on the car) for which side was which. I've left the sensors and wiring in the diff and at least I've managed to put that in the right way round...

Accepting he'd be a monumental bellend for doing this... help would be appreciated. One cable is shorter than the other so the plug sits to the nearside of the car by an inch or so.

Note to self - next time take a lot more photos.

Ive recommended this place to someone on Faceache - he reckons he has tried twice but has never got past admin approval. Any advice I can give him?

I of course joined far enough ago that I think I had to send a stamped addressed envelope. Although TB was very pleased to receive my picture unfortunately he was not able to return it.

Going to fit new ones whilst I'm doing everything else... Are the lambdas different for pre and post-cat on the 3.2? They both appear to have four wires but there's two part numbers coming up?

Omega General Help / Removing air con system
« on: 26 May 2022, 16:41:41 »
Whilst reassembling I'm thinking I'll leave all the aircon gubbins off. For one thing it's not something that's ever worked in... any of my cars, actually... and for another I'm incredibly lazy and it'll mean less work to put it all back together.

Remove the pump... leave the pipes off... fit a shorter drivebelt - anything else to think about?

Omega General Help / Coolant bridge banjo/ hollow bolts
« on: 26 May 2022, 13:16:31 »
Despite being Britain's Most Organised Man* I've managed to put my coolant bridge bolts in a Safe Place from which there is No Return.

Before I have a coronary at the dealer's price, does anyone happen to know what size they are? M16 I think, but thread and length?

Part number I think is 12992646 "HOLLOW CHANNEL BOLT FOR COOLER BRIDGE"

Nick, I've sent you a couple of PMs as I wish to settle my debts... ;) :y

I've tried a few searches to no avail - feel free to call me useless and point me to the right page if it already exists.

While half the interior of the ex-plod is in the kitchen (yes), I'm tidying the old wiring up and thinking where I can reuse it to my advantage.

The plugs for the rear seat switches under the armrest have some interesting patching - red/ white and brown wires. Am I right in thinking the red/white is a switched live (on a timer?) and the brown is earth? If so it's going to be ideal for my rear USB socket of wonder...

Just a quick couple of thank yous - after another trip to ADs bunker of magic, I now have freshly renewed fuel pipes... And then got home and found a parcel from CW that means I can finish clipping them in! Thanks both :y

Omega General Help / Rear damper top mounts
« on: 25 April 2022, 17:31:08 »
Next on my list... I need some new mounts for the rear dampers. Cup washers, inner tubes, and the rubbers.

I know the rubbers are available for pennies - are the washers GM only... or can I get them elsewhere? Indeed, if anyone has a kit sat in their shed... :y
