General Discussion Area / I can see why fly tipping!
« on: 06 January 2017, 15:32:04 »
I have been to the tip twice this week, each time ive sat in the queue for 1/2hr  :(
I deliberately waited until this week, as I was assuming most people are back at work  :-\
So I can see the temptation of fly tipping if you don't want to wait in the queue!

The junk room is looking emptier now  ;D

One combi oven (knackered)
One upright vacuum cleaner (working but too heavy and cumbersome)
One 14" CRT Sony TV (working)
One Sony VHS player (working)
One DVD player (working)
Pair of wifi speakers (working, but rechargeable batteries knackered)
One DVD/HD recorder (knackered)

Still more to go but its a start  ;D

One thing that did surprise me a bit, was the container for the TV's, just full of flat panels, no other CRT in sight! Some of them were really big as well, that you just know cost £1000's a few years ago  :o

After searching for mine most of this morning....ive just found it .. by ringing my number... :y

It was in the laundry basket in my bedroom  ;D I assume it was in a pocket of pair of jeans I was wearing yesterday  ::)

General Car Chat / Ive broken it again!

My Mondeo 1.6TD  :(

Started as usual this morning....10secs later, a big cough type noise/sound and it stalled. And then refused to restart.

Garage came out to me and towed it back to the garage. Interesting experience, being towed with a bar at around 60mph down a dual carriageway  ::) I don't think the tow vehicle even knew it was towing, given how quickly it was at accelerating away from junctions...tho it was a Jeep Grand Cherokee with a 3L V6 diesel lump in it.

After 20min diag on it....the 2 mechanics looking at it both decided it was cam timing problem, but when they undid the top of the cambelt cover, the cam belt was still attached to the cam shaft , couldn't see anymore than that....they expected to see the cam belt missing...but even with it still there, they still insisted its cam timing.

ECU was complaining of Cam shaft sensor, but the mechanic reckoned that was a red herring.

So I don't I know whats up with it.......

Bad news is that it probably wont be fixed until the new year  :( .....Good news, was the only spare car they had was a 62plate Merc E250d auto  ;D

I suppose the other good news is, it decided to go wrong today and not on Sunday .....

General Discussion Area / Central heating....
« on: 16 December 2016, 19:40:52 »
Quite pleased with myself today  :)

My mum has been in hospital for the last 3 weeks.....today she was going home  :y

Ive had her central heating set at 15C for last 3 weeks.....just to stop the house getting too cold...and just let it do its thing..

So this morning I pop over to her house and turn the stat up to 21C....boiler kicks in, but 5 mins later it shuts down again and stays off....rads were luke warm when the boiler shut down...

I knew she paid for central heating insurance.....so I phoned up insurance comp....and got told to phone the number they gave me and quote an authorization code.....so phoned the central heating comp and explained the situation....got told they couldn't do anything for a week  >:(
Phoned the insurance comp back, told them the outcome of that call.....and was given another number to call.....same result basically....carnt come out this week or next  >:(

So I thought, sod em, lets do some basic fault finding....

So...

Boiler kicks in....but shuts down super quick....
Went up into loft to check the pump.....pump is running....but found two bleed valves about 2 inches above the pump (why 2valves I don't know)
Opened one valve, air hissed out.....closed when water ran out
Same thing with the other valve.....air hissed out then water.....

Boiler kicked back in and heating was working again  :y

So guess the pump was trying to circulate air!

Lovely and jubley warm when she came home  :y

I think I'm going to cancel the heating insurance she has......as clearly it doesn't suit an 85 old....I stressed this when I rang ins comp....and all they did was give me numbers to plumbers...whatever....who wouldn't come out as an emergency!  >:(

Its £300 a year she pays for central heating failure  >:(

General Discussion Area / Another plumbing question
« on: 07 December 2016, 17:26:08 »
Probably about 2 years ago I had a dripping cold water tap in the kitchen.....so I did what I usually do....nothing  ;D

About a year later its getting to the point where hardly any water was coming out of it and still dripping  ::)

So I went to local hardware store and got a tap washer and changed it   :y

But they obviously don't make tap washers like they used to or I did something wrong when I changed it, as its now dripping again, a year after changing it   >:(

So, I just changed it, old one out, new one in. Are you suppose to add petroleum jelly or summat like on the washer before fitting?  :-\

Might change it again tomorrow if I get time, but would like to know if I did summat wrong last time  :)

Had to buy a new microwave/oven combi a couple of weeks ago....as the old combi oven had started to make a noise like a jet engine when in convection mode.....well impressed so far with new one, so far. Old one in convection mode used to take nearly 10 mins to get to 180C and sounded like a jet engine as well.....new one gets to 180C in less than 2 mins  :y

I threatened the dishwasher it was going to the tip and the end of last week as it was misbehaving.....nearly bought a new one this weekend.....but didn't as the one I wanted I would have to order......since I threatened the old dishwasher its be on 4 times and behaved its self every time  ::)

Maybe I should have threatened the old microwave as well  ;D ;D

General Car Chat / My Ford broke down today
« on: 01 December 2016, 18:30:51 »
I don't believe it!  ::)

So, lets have a little guess/competition at what was wrong.....or what the garage diagnosed/changed...

Phone call to the garage went like this...

Me....Its broke
Garage...How is it broke
Me...Its got no power...it will rev ok in neutral....put it in gear and try to pull away it keeps cutting out...push the clutch in and it will rev happily ....let the clutch out and it doesn't want to go....oh and it keeps putting up the display "Engine malfunction"
Garage...Whats its saying outside temp is?
Me....-6C
Garage....Let it idle for 30 mins and then try to drive it to us.....if it still wont behave phone us back and we'll get it lifted.

It did behave after 30mins of idling and I drove it to the garage...

When I got there...Garage boss (who I was speaking to on the phone) said it sounded like..................

But said i'll put it on the code reader to see what its complaining about......fault codes came up....and said "yup just as I suspected, we'll get a new........fitted"

So....any ideas? Its a 1.6TD Mondeo....

Pickled eggs done  :)

BUT not like I usually do them....I usually buy Sarsens pickling vinegar and add some chillies and garlic along with the eggs.

This time about pint of vinegar in a saucepan with various pickling spices with added chillies garlic and ginger.
Bought to the boil and left to cool down. Doz eggs in jar, pour over strained mix from the saucepan.

Job jobbed  :)

The eggs could be a tad warmer I reckon  :D

Very bad year for sloes this year, so no sloe gin this year  :(

For the last two quarterly bills they have been telling me I can save money if I switch tariffs

The tariff I'm on and the tariff they want me to change to are both fixed price tariffs

The tariff I'm on ends March 2017. The tariff they want me to change to ends Dec 2017.

They tell me I can save £32 on my leccy and £36 on my gaz if I change.....

Looking at the prices between the tariffs I fail to see how....perhaps someone can tell me  :-\

Tariff I'm on prices

Leccy is 8.882p/KW . SC is 16.96p/day
Gaz is 2.73p/KW . SC is 16.96p/day

Tariff they want me to change to

Leccy is 9.96p/KW . SC is 20.55p/day
Gaz is 3.08p/KW . SC is 20.55p/day

So seeing how the price per unit and the SC is higher on both leccy on gaz I fail to see how I'm suppose to save the combined total of £68 in a year!  :-\

Unless any has any ideas how they worked that out I'm mystified!  ::)

General Discussion Area / Land line problem again!
« on: 23 October 2016, 10:38:57 »
I can make a call fine, the internet works ok, but anyone trying to call me gets cut off after one ring.

Phoned customer services who said, line was showing a 'potential' problem. Then he got me to remove the front plate of the master socket and plug in phone, then he gave me a call and got cut off after one ring....

Its been doing that for weeks, just ive not realised there was a problem with my phone line  ::)

Engineer is booked for a visit Tuesday morning.......

General Discussion Area / Isnt technology wonderful!
« on: 11 September 2016, 18:16:55 »
We used to have a radio and a data unit in the cars for 'taxi' work, which used to work fairly ok if you didn't park in a 'dead' spot or go out of range of the transmitter.

Now 'because we can' the radio's and data units have been ripped out and replaced with an app on a phone. Suppose to be brilliant, which in some respects it is better than the 'old' way of doing things. ie you never go out of range is one example, another is the app has a 'meter' which tracks you via GPS, so the at the end of the journey the fare is displayed in big red numbers, so no disputing the fare!

Downside the app hammers the battery, even when plugged into the charger in my car the battery still gradually goes down! But when its using the data connection and GPS all the time, that's expected I guess  :-\

Another downside is, if you should actually use the phone to actually make a phone call, better make it quick, coz the app carnt receive a job if your on a phone call!

Old system use to send to the data unit a map which showed you the pickup point and the destination which was handy if you couldn't quite remember where exactly they were and saved you looking in a map book.

New system uses google maps to show you the way to both places, which is great if it works....on my phone every time I hit the 'get me there' button, google maps use to fire and then complain it couldn't connect to maps.

So ive just spent the last hour googling the problem and checking settings, which all seemed ok. Then I found a web page that suggested deleting the cache......so I found a button on my phone that said 'delete all cache for all apps' so that's what I did.

Google maps appears to working correctly now from the 'taxi' app so i'll see how it goes this week  :-\

This morning spent an hour fixing the problem of my notebook not shutting down correctly after the win10 update.

So, thats 2 hours today of my life sorting out problems caused by 'advancing' technology. Aint it great!!  :(
