General Car Chat / Mystery cars on the "road to nowhere" - pic heavy
« on: 18 September 2013, 10:26:40 »
Whilst staying with Varche we decided to take a trip up Top Gear's "road to nowhere" near Granada in Spain. It turned out to be quite interesting. Firstly, it doesn't actually go nowhere. There's a ski resort there:

The view's quite nice:

There is also a coffee shop at the top, a couple of observatories, one old and ruined, one modern, with what looks like a radio telescope. Height at the top of the road is about 9000 feet above sea level. Anyway, the more interesting thing is that there was clearly a lot of car testing going on.

I spotted a couple of "mystery cars" with bodywork obscured by stick-on panels and defensive paint patterns. Some ordinary cars had "lumps and bumps" on the bonnet, suggesting something unconventional was being tested underneath. One car I saw had some unconventional looking connections by the fuel filler. Picture quality isn't great as I was watching from a distance without a long lens:

These cars were being driven up and down the hill constantly by a team of drivers, all with laptops plugged in. Periodically, there'd be a driver change, and the exiting driver would sit down with a coffee and have a good rummage on his laptop. Lots of apparently standard VW/Audi cars were doing this in addition to the disguised ones. The top two cars above I caught sight of doing a standing start up a section of mountain road when they thought nobody was around and 'kinnel did they take off! :o

I also spotted a couple of cars towing these, or variations of them:

A smallish trailer, but look at the size of the wheels, and the cooling ducts! This thing was putting out quite a heat haze when it pulled up! "Towing dynamometer", apparently. I guess it's used to retard the car and simulate towing without the embarrassment of having to take a caravan with you. ;)

General Discussion Area / A big thank you to the Varches
« on: 17 September 2013, 14:08:11 »
Emma and I would like to say a big thank you to Varche (Bryan) and Sue for their hospitality during our recent MX5 tour of Spain. :y

It was great to meet you and share your beautiful abode, with its' fantastic views, for a couple of days.

We've all followed Varche's trials and tribulations of Omega ownership "out in the sticks" for many years. Only by visiting did I understand it all, TBH. I think Sue put it in words best "It's just the price we pay for living in paradise". She wasn't joking.

Of course, like many of us, they do have to put up with living close to the main road through their neighbourhood!

Oh, and Emma says farewell to her new friend too.

General Car Chat / Farewell to a fellow petrol head
« on: 01 August 2013, 17:44:08 »
I doubt anyone on here knew him, but we lost a lovely man last week, who inspired an online international community of petrol heads, not dissimilar to this one, to get in their cars and gather together to enjoy the finest roads and each other's company. 14 years, and countless new friends later came the time to say goodbye.

So, how to say goodbye to a true petrol head? Well, exactly as he himself specified, of course.... ;)

Rest in peace, Johnty, as they say. Peace for Johnty being the sound of an engine bouncing off the rev limiter. I can just hear him shouting from the back of that hearse "Keep it planted, now!" "Don't lift!".

So, I'm sitting here wondering why on earth I didn't cancel all the things that seemed so urgent last week, chuck my little car on a ferry and join that convoy. :'(

Omega General Help / 3.2 Battery size
« on: 16 January 2013, 10:39:07 »
Quick question: Anybody know what size battery fits a 3.2? Hellfrauds site suggests it's an 065, not that I'm prepared to pay their prices. :o

Need one quickly so it'll have to be the motor factors. Just want to double check the fit.

General Car Chat / Halfrauds oil on special
« on: 05 January 2013, 12:07:40 »
Popped into Halfords the other day and they have almost all their oil on special offer.

This includes their Vauxhall / BMW spec. fully synthetic 5w30, for 10 for 4 litres. :y
