Afternoon,

I sourced a spare ar35 from omegas52 on ebay, its coming to me on friday.
The thing is, no one round here is prepared to swap the boxes for me. (We dont touch automatics mate) etc etc.

I dont have access to a ramp, but im considering trying it, can anyone give me their view on this please?
How long might it take for example?
The old box has needed topping up every two weeks for a while, now its undrivable.

I would really rather not do it but its looking like i dont have much choice.

I'd say if you can get the car up on ramps it's do-able in a day with a helper.

Make sure you install the torque converter fully home on the transmission before offering up the whole assembly and then bolt the torque converter to the driveplate with the whole lot in-situ. Don't be tempted to attach the TC to the driveplate first and then offer up the transmission as this will destroy the seal.

I've done it on the drive before with 2 ramps and a couple of jacks (for the box) - now I think I could do it in 1 day, the old off and the new one on. The first time it took me 2 days.

I would allow 2 days, you might be pleasantly surprised and do it in 1

Care is needed though as its heavy and hurts like fack if it falls on your hand. 
Cant understand a garage turning the job down for any reason. Its basically a load of nuts & bolts to remove, and then put back. Nothing technical about it.

I'm 80 and did mine a year or so ago in the garage on my own using axle stands. I didn't find it easy because I am not quite so agile as I once was, but it is certainly doable on your own. I borrowed a gearbox jack from Joff, but when JamesV6 swapped boxes for me a few years ago, he used two jacks. I found the most awkward jobs were lining up the box to mate it to the engine, and tightening the top bell housing bolts which required about 3' of extensions.

I never turn job away
Omega gearbox replacement is pleasure to do on ramp compare to some other cars
Like merc b class where you need to remove engine and gearbox to replace clutch

Absolutely, but it makes me wonder how they make a living from it. Ripping off the gullible is probably the answer.

Yep, no profit in doing jobs for people who know what's wrong and roughly how much they should be charged.

Ive just realised, after many years of wondering,  why I have never made any money. 
Stupidity may also have something to do with it though.

I remember I turned up a Sassanach's place circa 4pm one Sunday, he had the (utterly shagged) AR25 off the car, stripped to component pieces to prove the clutch plates were non existent, the AR35 bellhousing off (as was going on a TD), thrust washer replaced with Sonex, bolted back in place, filled up with ATF, and I was gone by 7pm, after a quick brew.

But then he did know his autoboxes, plus being a TD, the cats didn't have to come off.
