Chiropractor or Osteopath?
« on: 19 October 2017, 12:37:35 »

I suffer from pain in my lower back, hips and knees.  :(

I was told years ago that I have a twisted pelvis which at the time didn't cause any problems, but as I've got older the pain levels have increased and at times I've had mobility issues which can only get worse.  :-\  My GP's response has been to dish out painkillers and anti inflammatories which have helped, but I don't feel that these are treating the problem just masking the symptoms.  :-\

I'm wondering if manipulation might help and given most of you lot are creaky old geezers, i thought this was the ideal place to ask!  :)

So Chiropractor, Osteopath or Physiotherapist?  ???  TIA!  :y

Don't assume this, Sir Tig.

Not sure about knees and hips but back pain often improves with age due to fusion of the lower spine as we age.

Less flexibility but also less pain. :y

Excess weight will make the problem worse.

Not really, although like most middle age blokes I could probably do with losing a few pounds, I can still see my old fella!  :)

What made me think of some manipulation, was a new pair of shoes that nearly crippled me.  :'(

They were the same as my old pair but I think that the new un-worn soles forced my hips and pelvis into a different position.  Ouch!  ::)

I think that generally GP's see Chiropractor's and the like as Quacks, but I saw an episode of 'Doctor In The House' recently where the Dr sent a chap off to some specialist or other who pulled him about and apparently made a world of difference.  :-\

OP and CP often do little man than make a lot of money. That is my experience.

Activity is important or you'll seize solid. I suggest gentle exercise (walking) along with possibly yoga and swimming.

It depends if your problem is muscular or mechanical.

Physiotherapist ! Absolutely. They are regulated and properly qualified. Some will disagree but the others are on the verge of "Alternative Medicine". Some really are very good but others are just quacks and bullshitters

Yes.....but Sir Tigger lives in rural Dorset where women with their own teeth are hard to find......so he'll probably have to improvise.

If you can find one near you have a chat with a McTimoney Chiropractor ... After years of physio/osteopath/chiropractors of various type and hues this has been a godsend to me ...

Many years back I slipped 2 discs in my back, the RAF treatment was to hang weights off my ankles for 7 days then tell me I had to live with it .....  various practitioners over the years have pushed, twisted, pummelled etc etc all achieving not a lot. At a large country show there was a McTimoney  demonstration going on that Chris persuaded me to  "have a go" .... lead on the bed and this guy just looked at me for a couple of minutes - he wouldn't let me say anything - then pulled my ankles gently, and then told me that I had at some time I had damaged my back and that there was something "strange" with my pelvis / leg geometry that he couldn't fathom ... I then told him I had had polio as a kid which has left my right leg 1/2" shorter than the left ... he then asked me if anyone had ever aligned my pelvis ... answer no .... so he then did it .. just a few small shoves on my hips an a couple of pulls on my buttocks and the pain was gone !! Seems my back had been compensating for a twisted pelvis for many years, not helped by the "short leg" which tends to twist the pelvis anyhow.

I would not have believed the difference if you had told me .. in simple terms its all about small movements to realign the body not bloody great big ones that most osteopaths seem to enjoy !!.

My local lass is quite small, but manages to put everything back in line with no problems and I feel great .. I visit every 6 months for a check up and no longer walk like a pregnant duck after working on the car, and can easily walk the dog 5 - 6 miles without any pain ... something that was not possible for many years. Every visit is £40 for an hour as she checks and, if necessary, realigns every joint in the body.

I would recommend her to anyone with any muscular pain at all.

A chiropractor is also regulated and properly qualified to Doctorate level.  A physio does a fraction of what a CP does, but a CP will do all that a Physio does.
OP's can also be good, but less regulated and not as qualified.

Wow, that's great to hear, Albs. Before I read down to your post, I was going to say Chiropracter above all else because I had a good experience with one near Wareham Station (near you at all. Sir?) when I had a neck/shoulder problem plus hip pain.
First visit, a few gentle manipulations and magic happened. Another visit two weeks later to check and I was declared fixed!

I haven't posted anything yet.  :D

For muscular / skeletal problems, I think an MRI scan is the way to go these days. Ive had two in the last month and will have nother in the next week or two.
Apparently my lower right leg is quite complicated.  ::)

That's interesting thanks Nige!  :y  I think I need my pelvis realigned....  :-\

I take it that a McTimoney Chiropractor is a kind of sub discipline?  ???

I've found a McTimoney Chiropractor about 5 miles away, so I think I'll give them a ring tomorrow.  :y

McTimoney is a lesser qualification that the Doctor of Chiropractic required to call yourself a Chiropractor - it is a shorter training period and does not include full diagnosis and x-ray/imaging interpretation that is part of the main degree course.

On a serious note, Mrs. KW sees an Osteopath due to a back problem and it does help. No idea what the difference is between that and a Chiropractor, though. :-\

From the website ...

"In general terms, physiotherapy works on the soft tissue between the vertebrae and other joints and does not usually involve spinal manipulation; osteopathy tends to apply long lever techniques if the spine is manipulated, whilst chiropractic applies short levers in a precise adjustment of the individual vertebrae."

Update.  :)

I've had a few sessions with a Chiropractor and generally I walk out of his office like a spring lamb!  :y  Well not quite.  ;)

So whatever he does seems to help but it dosn't last.  Interestingly the pain seems to have switched from my right hip to the left, which he says is that as he's realigned me the left is doing more which is why it's grumbling.  :-\

He also reckons that all the little muscles around the hip joints have become stiff with age and that's the source of the pain rather than the joint itself.  I'm going to keep going for a while and see how it goes.  ::)

An option I have been considering recently.  ::)
Had an appointment with a surgeon to discuss the possibility of replacing my right knee joint. The info I gave him led to him to believe I may have infection inside the bone in my lower leg, and it if so it has ben there since I had compound fractures 12/10 1976 !! :o
He sent me for an MRI scan to determine this, as it should light up like a Christmas tree on the scan.
The scan was inconclusive because it was masked by the fact that the muscle on the outside of the lower leg is extremely calcified which apparently didn't allow them to see what else is going on.
Back for another scan with an injection of dye first.
This showed there is indeed a lot of infection living inside the bone which means the knee joint cant be replaced until this is removed.
I thought this might mean a course of strong antibiotics, but no.
It involves cutting a hole in the bone and scooping the infection out, then probably packing it with antibiotic pellets.
Then we can talk about knee joint replacement.
I'm thinking that whatever state its in, it has stopped me from falling over for the last 41 years and I'm nearly 60 now, so is it worth the aggro.
Might be best to leave things alone.  :-\ ::)................or just do a google search on the nearest glue factory.  ;D

I was told years ago that I have a twisted pelvis which at the time didn't cause any problems, but as I've got older the pain levels have increased and at times I've had mobility issues which can only get worse.  :-\  My GP's response has been to dish out painkillers and anti inflammatories which have helped, but I don't feel that these are treating the problem just masking the symptoms:-\

I'm wondering if manipulation might help and given most of you lot are creaky old geezers, i thought this was the ideal place to ask!  :)

So Chiropractor, Osteopath or Physiotherapist?  ???  TIA!  :y

Unfortunately this is the first call for GP's, they just act as a firewall between you and an expert opinion. >:(

:-\ ::)................or just do a google search on the nearest glue factory.  ;D

Go to supervet, he does this every week! ::)

Probably cheaper to take yourself off to the nearest glue factory?  :P

Sniffing a bit of glue now and again might ease the pain.  :)

Update.  ::)

About a month ago the pain in my left hip was getting worse and I was struggling to walk any distance and wasn't sleeping properly.  :(

So I went to my GP who booked me in for X-Rays and an appointment with the Orthopedics Specialist, who I saw this afternoon.  :y

The X-Ray shows that the hip joint is very worn and he said that the pain is caused by the bone rubbing on bone and that a hip replacement is the answer.  :(  He showed no interest in the fact that before I saw the Chiropractor it was my right hip that was painful or why the pain has switched sides.  He merely said that "the evidence is all there", pointing to the X-Ray.  ::)

As I'm not in as much pain as I was a month ago, I've declined his kind offer to take his scalpels and saws to me and will see how things go.  :-\

That's interesting Tony, as when I first saw the Chiropractor he said I had a stiff ankle which was part of the problem.  ???
