Motorway service access
« on: 27 October 2017, 18:38:47 »

During a chat today the question was posed, is it against the law to use a service road to access motorway services. I used to exit the M1 years ago at the Watford Gap Services using their service road as it saved me a few miles, and was never stopped by the occasionally parked police car.  The signs say "Authorised vehicles only", but is this enshrined in law?

Believe it's classed as a private road and therefore the access restrictions are enforced by the land owner.

I have managed to talk nicely to staff at one or two services and exit via the service road when the Motorway has been closed.  :-X

I used to do this regularly at Scratchwood services on the M1, until they put a barrier with a security code in!

Crossed over the service road at Tebay the other week, but that was their fault. They didn't have any LPG on the Southbound side. ::)

Our local motorway services at Farthing Corner on the M2 the access roads are very well used for a nearby housing estate and surrounding areas, it gets used just as a motorway junction, they have tried numerous times to close off the 'private' roads with gates and locks but they just get broken down... In fact I used it today as it was easier to use the motorway than the narrow country lanes to get home..

Been instructed by staff to do that several times when one direction has no LPG but the other does... was stopped by the plod once and asked what I was doing, once told he even gave me an escort there and back  blue lights an all .. nice guy actually, no hassle, methinks he might have been bored ......  :)

You have to cross over to get to the hotel too. Oh, and the restaurant in the hotel is outstanding. :y

You used to be able to get around that one (years ago) by driving into the Hotel Car Park driving all the way around and back out again giving you an option as to which side of the barrier to enter or leave.

That little slip road (about 200m from memory) used to be a really great way of getting from the the M1 onto the A1 or vice versa and avoid the traffic rush hours.  :y :y

Alas, these days fully secure and camera'ed up, so no chance.  :(

iirc there was a big issue on this at the M3 Fleet services, with police prosecutions, when it became a major rat run. :( :( :(

Going on to various forums, at best it seems like a legal grey area with private and public land and roads being a key issue for enforcement. ::) ::) ::)

Might have been guilty of that one myself when we used to hit McD's at Fleet services in our lunch break from school, then back via the service road. Having said that, the speed at which we arrived at the services might have been of greater interest to the authorities. :-X
