I saw that. My take is the EU now has the monopoly and use of the word European and despite geography saying otherwise, Britain no longer is part of Europe. Doesnt bode well for trade and security. Definitely heading for a no deal and a hundred years of red tape.

What non eu country cities are being allowed to take part? Istanbul perhaps?......

I wonder if we will be allowed to play in European football tournaments. G

If it is an EU project for EU member states then they are perfectly correct to say we cant be involved.
If it is an EU project, how could anyone take seriously a project on culture, originating in Brussels, which is in Belgium. 
If it isn't, we should fight them on the beaches.....

Yes Istanbul, also Reykjavik, Krakow, and Prague.  The last two were in 2000 before their countries joined the EU in 2004. 

There are between 44 and 51 countries in Europe depending on whether you think countries like Turkey, Georgia or Azerbaijan are European or not. 

Maybe we'll get banned from Eurovision next!

Agreed.  Anyway, what did people expect would happen given Brexit.  A majority voted to leave the club and be a power outside Europe, so we can hardly now say we want to be involved in these European "promotions".  The UK lobbying cities apparently have already spent upwards of £1 million to put their case together; what a waste!!

As others have said, hopefully we will also be out of the Eurovision song contest!

I had to chuckle a few weeks ago when at our International Committees 93rd annual gathering (guest speaker was Tom O'Connor).

One of the old boys there was doing a talk and he now volunteers in the Portsmouth historic dockyard.

Told a great tail how he was showing a group of visitors around HMS Victory and a French lady asked if 'the stacks of cannon balls were from the Battle of Trafalgar', his reply was 'no, your navy still has those ones'

In actual fact the Royal Navy ships on the day, including Victory, had virtually used up all their ammunition by about 1630 on the afternoon of the 21st, just as the French ship Achille blew up, as so much had been fired into the combined fleet

I've adapted my view on this. 

Although there's no doubt that it's an EU competition and in 2023 we won't be in the EU.  I still think it's just out of spite that the EU have decided now that UK cities can't take part, as non EU cities have taken part in the past.  Why didn't they tell us just after the referendum or just after we issued A50? 

I also think that it was utterly negligent of the councils involved to carry on spending tax payers money preparing these bids, before clarifying the situation with the competitions organisers beforehand.  I hope that they all get booted out of office at the next council elections!
