Isn't there a cable tie at the top on the inside?  There certainly was on my manual Astra ..... can't really remember for my Omega

Havent looked too closely yet as thought there might be a simple method.

Looking at the new one I have got seems either the gear shift top needs to be removed or the stitching needs cutting then re sewing .

Must be a simpler way

Cutting the stitching and resewing IS the simple way. Far easier than faffing about with the lever. If the new gaiter is aftermarket then some thin, stiff wire will gather up the top after you've trimmed and glued the bottom in place. I use 0.032" lockwire, which probably takes as long as resewing but is easier. It's a 30minute job, start to finish; add another 20minutes for a matching handbrake gaiter. Well worth the £15 cost for both

Undoing the stitching is the only way I know to do the job.

Does the retaining rigid section just unclip from recess at bottom ?

From memory, yes. The stitching can be undone from the top after as small a cut as you can get away with to start undoing it, but keep the thread attached so it can be stitched up again, if that makes sense ?
