Brexit snakes and ladders
« on: 15 December 2017, 18:13:25 »

So the good news. Stage one has been agreed.

Not so good. No negotiation on trade deals till March . Another 60 or 90 days wasted. Not good for businesses. Was it Donald Tusk that said the clock is ticking. . ......

Not so good . no fine  detail for expats living in other countries despite stage one being so called agreed.

It seems to me that although it is the EU saying 'Tick tock, tick tock', it is them that drag their heels when it come to getting stuck in.  ::)

Back in March when we delivered A50, they then turned round and said they couldn't start talks until June despite saying for 8 months or so that they were ready when we were.  :-\

TM then decided that rather than sit around twiddling her thumbs, she hold a quick General Election.....  :o  Oooops!  ;D

The whole clusteropps can be explained very simply:

The EU wonks did not expect anyone to want to leave, so they have no procedures in place.
The British politicians and electorate haven't got a clue what they actually want(the Golgafrinchams are real ;D ) so there's no way of achieving any of it.

Any questions?

The blind will lead the blind for a year or so and then we’ll see where we are. I can’t see any reason to keep guessing at the outcome. Both remoaners and brexiteers views fall on deaf ears as far as I’m concerned. We will end up where we end up.
Now go and have a nice cup of tea.

Funny how the EU kept jibing that they were all ready and prepared once the UK got its arse into gear. Now every time there is a little progress, they announce that nothing more can happen until x months hence, due to this, that or the other.
I wonder if Merkel is pulling strings behind the scenes to stall things until Juncker is behind bars, and she can have his job.  :)

Looks like the EU are going to trigger article 9 very soon against Poland. Things could get interesting in the new year.

Yeah, well, you see, while I was typing about article 7 swmbo was talking to me about something or other and I pressed the 9 key.......
You know how it goes.  :-[ ;D  Apparently the Commission have now voted to trigger article seven
and it requires a two thirds majority of member states to vote in favour of the decision.

I tried to find a similar link, for the sake of balance, from the mainstream media, but none of them seem to be carrying it, so far.  ::)

I think that the reforms that the Polish government is making will reduce the independence of the judiciary and as an independent judiciary is one of the cornerstones of a modern democratic country I don't necessarily think that these reforms are good.   :-\  It makes you wonder whether Poland is turning away from the Western world and back towards Russia.  :-\

Two other things happened in BREXIT land today.  :)

1) It was announced that banks from EU countries will be allowed to operate in The City as they are now and there will be no restrictions post BREXIT.  This is a shrewd move by HMG as (a) it takes the moral high ground over Barnier, who has announced that financial services will not be part of any UK/EU FTA and (b) as time goes on after BREXIT, I suspect that the UK will adopt a lighter regulatory approach over financial services than the EU and EU banks will use their UK base for global operations.   ;)

2) Barnier announced that any transition period post BREXIT will end on 31st December 2020.  This is also good in my view as it will halt any attempts to keep the UK in some sort of endless transition period, and everyone from a street sweeper to the Chairmen of the big blue chips will know when the UK is finally out of the EU!  :)

Many people believe that government has control of the judiciary. It doesn't.......and shouldn't.

Yes... a shrew move. Barnier may still say a big 'f*ck you' though.

Let's see what happens.

How you can start trade negotiations by stating bluntly that the FTA you will be negotiating will not apply to a major sector of your opposite numbers economy is completely beyond me!  :o  ::)

No wonder that the Canadian deal CETA took nearly a decade to organise with that arrogant approach!  ::)
