Best place to sell IT equipment
« on: 04 January 2018, 11:53:34 »

As the title says, other than eBay or other such sites, where’s the best place to clear IT equipment?
Have some switches, fairly new apc ups and a few other bits that aren’t really ‘general consumer’ kind of items, and didn’t know if any specialist sites, if they exist, to move it on and free space.

Gumtree? When I did some contracting years ago back at my first company post Uni. I basically emptied they server room when they went bust, at the time I managed to build up around 5 or 6 complete IBM machines. Complete with tower, screen etc and flogged them on Gumtree, people came and collected for cash.

Also offloaded some old rack mounted switched and backup data tapes.

Problem being that most of what it sounds like you have are only suitable for larger business, and most of those that aren't family run type businesses will be buying new. Family run type larger businesses will only replace what they have in order to upgrade, and they probably already run 1Gps smart or managed switches, so unless you've got 10Gbps switches....

...nobody buys 2nd hand UPS, as by the time you've replaced the batteries, its the same price as a new unit.

Lab enthusiasts might be keen, but most high end gear is a bit noisy and power juicy for the back bedroom etc. Cisco kit might shift for those looking to take Cisco exams, but the emulators are pretty good now.

You're looking for a very niche market. Which probably means egay for the coverage....   ....or network geeky forums for the switches etc (but like us buying Omegas, they will not be prepared to pay top dollar)

If there was an easy way, I have a shit load of aaronjb's stuff scattered around the country, used as little more than tables and stepladders ;D

Dont bother putting your APC UPS's on the Bay, I did some that I acquired a few years back, complete with brand new replacement batteries, I got a pittance for them and packaging and postage / courier  was a real pain, but I needed the space at the time.

On reflection I would have been better selling the Batteries and getting scrap value for the UPS's.

On the Switches / Hubs, there are some Second Hand Office Telecoms / Phone Dealers out there that will give you a drink for them, but again dont expect much.

Thanks for the responses, all pretty much what I’d thought tbh, the people who’d make use of them would be buying new in most cases.
I may keep the UPS, it’s only about 9 months old and is quite hefty, so couldn’t consider shipping it, and as mentioned, looks like eBay for the rest. I’ve found a company that buys second hand gear, but I don’t think I’ve the quantity to interest them, so I’m waiting a response to that effect!
I recall signing off on the switches a few years ago, at a price that would have got more than a few omegas, madness in a way they’re now commercially worthless! (But understandable)

I've just bought some small switches, before discount, around £100k a pop :o.  Mind you, a single card in some of our routers retail at £1m...   ...I wonder if they'd notice if I walked out with a fully populated (over 20 cards) router ;D
