A Runway Excursion Incident....
« on: 14 January 2018, 18:01:15 »

...... is how an accident at a Turkish airport has been described, where an aircraft came off the runway and went over a cliff!  :o

Makes it sound like a routine event!  ::)  ;D

Any of you aviators ever had a 'Runway Excursion Incident'?  ???  :P  :)

Got left and right confused by the look of it... The undercarriage and engines would have dug in as it went over the edge, holding it on the slope.

Would have been a low speed "Oh shit!" rather than a massive impact. Probably dropped the left main gear off the edge as it took a wide swing to turn round prior to taxiing back to the terminal. Gravity would soon take over...

Something entering the runway without permission is known as an incursion, so grammatically, something leaving the runway without permission would technically be an "excursion".

Only minor, but we landed at Athens in a 707 once shortly after the the runway reopened after a thunderstorm, and as we turned off the end, we saw the smoking wreck of this https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/news-photo/the-wreckage-of-a-swissair-dc-8-which-skidded-at-the-end-of-news-photo/3172135#11th-october-1979-the-wreckage-of-a-swissair-dc8-which-skidded-at-the-picture-id3172135 which 'landed' just before us! We had no warning, and they carried on normal operations as far as I could tell. :o ???

The story filtering out at the time, and it is probably apocryphal, was that the pilot(s) escaped injury and did a runner, only to be caught later, and charged accordingly. Probably not true, but makes a good story.
I can only imagine what our pax on the RH side thought as we passed the smoking wreck. :y
