Hello, is it possible to turn off the passenger airbag on a 53 plate CDX

Can't really fully answer the question, except that you can in my Mazda 6
Why would you want to turn it off....

You can't, as per the instructions. Only certain cars, fitted with VX child seats have the facility to automatically switch off the passenger airbag.

In any other scenario, fitting a rear facing child seat in the front of an Omega is criminally stupid, and anyone even considering such an act should be shot. Immediately.

Shame if he doesn't as it was a very valid question, and I'd imagine he asked for the safety reasons implied. 

On most of the beemers I've had, there is a keyhole on the end of the dash on the left hand side (UK version), only seen when the passenger door is fully open. You can pull the ignition key from its fob and insert it in the keyhole, and turn the key to deactivate the passenger airbag when a non bmw rear facing child seat is fitted.  It does warn you that it is off for your next journey.
I've noticed that since reading my 'death in service' pension forecast my wife deactivates it when I'm a passenger.
Should I read anything in to this.

On most modern cars there is the option to disable the front passenger airbag to facilitate the use of rear facing child seats. But, of course, on an ancient barge such as the omega and, indeed, most cars of that era, it wasn't thought to be necessary. Even only 20 years ago, these things were not thought of.
The OP asked a very valid question, he was not to know that a luxury car of it's time wouldn't have an option that nearly every car has these days. He certainly knows now.

My wife's 60 plate Citroen C3 has a key operated switch in the glove box to de-activate the passenger airbag. My 07 Merc relies on a mega expensive Merc seat to talk to it .

Only those with the optional child set detector fitted, along with the official VX childseat, disables passenger airbag.

This option was rarely chosen at purchase, though did end up on a lot of late Elites, to use up the parts bin contents.



I would argue not child seat should ever be in the front, as it overly distracts the driver, too busy waving toys at the baby rather than concentrate on the job in hand.
