Just as well we don't know how we are going to die

Very unlucky. I cannot imagine the horror of it for the woman and those seated nearby.

Just as well we don't know how we are going to die.

Out of interest where is the safest place to be on a plane if you have to travel? I always try for near the front. partly as it is less noisy and partly down to having better air than at the rear .

Agreed, as none of us know exactly how and when we are going to move on.  Just as well really.

This was a dreadful accident, although not unknown, certainly rare. In a modern aircraft I do not think it makes much difference where you sit, and anyway when your number is up it is up wherever you are! ;)

Always aim to sit at the front of the wing root... Strongest part of any aircraft... The main spar runs full width across the fuselage, making the tube much more rigid, and is ahead of the main gear attachments making it less likely to likely to get the legs shoved up your arse :D

People have survived being partially sucked out for an extended period of time, but suspect that the blade coming through the window would have been pretty definitve :-\

In the cockpit.
On your own.
With the engine left on the ground (or let someone else fly with it 50m ahead).

On a serious note, I think it's actually statistically safest to be in the rear as the tail section is prone to breaking off and having a less exciting time of it in the collision. Besides, that's where they put the black boxes and ELT.

At the back because you never hear of a aircraft reversing into a mountain  ;D

Have just reread Snr Vs post, the air all enters the plane through the middle and gets distributed throughout... Ergo, the chances are that the air is just as stale by the time it reaches the end regardless of which end you happen to be  ;)

Above link shows why I choose my seat as above... A fairly typical break up if the aircraft lands roughly the right way up.

iirc most of the survivors of the Sioux City crash were in the central section of the aircraft.

If the plane hits a mountain, surviving isn't really an option  ::)

Besides, there's a very big difference between surviving, ie not dying and walking off...

I guess the back row would give you a hundred feet or so of warning that you're about to die... If you like that sort of thing ;D

.. and another salient point from this: ALWAYS have your seat belt fastened unless you have to be in the loo. ;)

If bad things are going to happen, I'd rather stay strapped to something, even if it's not a complete aeroplane. :o

Good point about seat belt being on.

Actually, that's not a bad decision. I am of the view that we take flying for granted, we expect to be able to go places at minimal cost, and we often travel for trivial reasons. Bring back the horse and cart !

The most logical safety feature I have encountered on an airliner was in 1964 when my parents and us flew back from Malta in an RAF Transport Command Comet 4b.

All the passenger seats faced the rear of the aircraft, the RAF logic being that in the event of a crash landing you would be pushed back into your seat.  For me, who loves flying and being at height, it was fantastic looking down during the steep ascent at where we had come from; Luqa airfield all laid out and quickly disappearing (no noise restrictions then on how steep the RAF pilot made the ascent!).

When I asked at the time why this was not a common layout for airliners, my dad, showing absolute fear of being "up there", said it was because so many people would be like him and fear flying if the seats faced the rear! ;D ;D ;D ;D

Does anyone who is RAF or ex-RAF know if Transport Command airliners still have their seats so configured? ???
