Interior Cabin Blower
« on: 06 June 2018, 13:18:21 »

Strange problem and could do with some help please.

Drove to work this morning approx. 30miles..A/C working fine and nice gentle cool air from blowers.

Parked up in direct sunlight for around 2 hours..got back into car started fine but felt warmer than temp at 20c climate panel was showing.Pressed blower to increase speed but no improvement.Turned climate down to increase cooling but still no improvement and no blower.

Checked A/C and clutch engaging and when moving there was a definite cool air movement but blower wouldn't work on ant temp setting nor manually adjusting with either eco on or off.

Have checked all fuses under steering wheel as seems several are labelled cooling fan but non are blown and everything else electrical seems to work.

Would of expected if motor failed fuse to of blown so now struggling to thing what else could be the issue.Assume there is a relay in the circuit...any idea which/colour and where .

Any help appreciated  :y

Drive with windows and roof open for a spell, close up and try again.  ;)

Ho hum, only suggested as if the interior temp is too high, it can struggle to make a difference  :-\

Pollen filter dry :-\

Either the panel is goosed or the hedgehog... Which is up to you, but the hedgehog standard failure mode is full power or nothing*...

*try resetting the panel ;)

Tried a reset but no improvement ,but can hear servos churning.

Climate panel allowing the alteration of the air from face/screen etc so power is getting to that and functioning correctly.

Hedgehog replaced last year and never had any water inside so strange if that is the fault but possible I suppose.

Are there any relays anywhere under the bonnet etc that could be influenecing this ?

Don't think so... Be the dash fuse panel, probably a 30/40 amp maxi fuse... There's 3 there iirc, one for the blower, one for the rear screen and one for the windows...  :y

Pulled every fuse inside car and non have blown.Even swopped those which say for blower with 1 from another location with same rating and still blower will not respond.

My thinking now is the hedgehog as that controls the fan speed so if its totally dead now circuit is getting to fan. From past problems with fans they tend to make a noise before either dying or running erratically.

Looks like the glove box etc is coming out tomorrow now as cant cope with no cooling in car ,and will see what I can find and check.

Assume there is no diagnosis for hedgehog .??.but fan can have 12 volts put across to check.

Now to source a supplier

If fan only runs at low speed it's unlikely to be hedgehog...

No fan at all suggests a control issue, which is the panel...

No fan speed at any setting so either panel or hedgehog then ?

Is there any way of diagnosing which

My money is on the panel...

Have a spare here, but unless you can collect it from Gatwick as I fly out tomorrow, I cannot be of much more use :-\

My thought is still with the hedgehog as the fan speed indicator is registering on the climate panel, all air diverting buttons are prompting the servos to sound and logic seems to be a dead short in the resistor.

Think for around £20 will take a punt at a new hedgehog and go from there

Sorry guys need some more help .

Blower suddenly started working tonight on way home from work, but cant alter the fan speed so am now convinced its the resistor at fault.

Problem now is fan wont stop !!!..switched car off ,keys out and fan is still running.
Tried pulling the fuse as indicated in manual ..being # 4..no luck..tried # 15 as that said coolant fan..still wont stop.

Short of removing earth from battery how can I stop it ? :(

Keep pulling fuses from the little box above the battery until it stops. Or pop the negative lead off the battery  :y

Yes have pulled the negative battery lead for tonight. :y

Need to go to Ramsgate in the morning so ideally would like to get it shut off other than by battery as need to meet a site agent at 11.00 and wont look to go with my head under the bonnet to get the car started afterwards. ::)

So there is a fuse in the large triangular box that controls the fan then ?

Not specifically iirc, but it will kill the feed :y

Currently 2,300 miles from a wiring diagram :D although Haynes should provide enough guidance ;)

Fault gets stranger by the minute !!

Reconnected battery negative this morning and fan isn't running nor has it been all day. ::)

I assuming with this intermittent fault most likely either relay sticking open/closed or resistor under glove box.
To be sure and able to isolate possible fault with relay can anybody( unlike me who can read an electrical circuit diagram  :D) kindly help identify what relay /colour and location is the most likely to switch the blower fan on/off

Thanks guys :y

If I understood you correctly, in one of its modes the fan was running even after you switched the ignition off? That implies that the relay, or whatever, has found a permanent live feed from somewhere, because I would expect the fan to be "live with ignition" only, regardless of whether it is fed via a ralay or not.

Ron,I understand that the blower fan has a constant supply and is regulated by several relays and the speed is altered by the large resistor(hedgehog)

My symptoms were.

No fan running at any speed for 2 days.
Last night fan started running but I weas unable to alter its speed and it wouldnt stop even with ignition off..so only option appeared to be disconnect battery.
Today battery reconnected and fan isnt running again....yet !!

Intend replacing the resitor as that seems to be most likely but would like to establish if a relay is also/or on its own at fault

Understood. Relays are easier to replace than hedgehogs - and cheaper!

It doesn't have a relay iirc...

That's to say that the hedgehog controls the fan, but the speed from 0-5 is triggered by the controls.

Main power feed for the blower is obviously fused though ;)

Must have a constant feed as what would cause it to run with ignition off and key removed..and assume given loading is must run through some relay or tother.

Just wanted to be sure I haven't got a dodgy relay giving current and then not.

All fixed and working as designed again :y

After wrestling in the passenger footwell to get resistor module out and new one back in this afternoon I can report for £18-35 off Amazon part fitted and working .

Thanks for help and patience with me guys :y ;D
