Just read the IVA manual, It will be tested as manufactured in 1997, so it will be BET on their flow chart.

If you can find a pre-august 1995 lump that runs well enough to pass the test it might save you some headaches - you can always replace the engine after it's registered. Emissions rules stay with the car for life regardless of subsequent engine changes.
It used to be the case that if the car was subjected to a BET at SVA/IVA it was still regarded as "manufactured on or before 1972" at MOT time (as were all amateur built vehicles), meaning the cats could come straight off again.
Might be worth checking if the MOT rules have changed. I know they now sometimes list the emissions limits on the log book now, so presumably these override the MOT manual at MOT time..
When MOT computerisation first happened my local station tried for ages to correct the "date of first use" of my car from 1972 to 2000, then they tried to do a BET, which it failed, of course.
