Project A - Battery Vs Alternator

Just done some multi-meter readings on Project A

With the engine & ignition off, the battery had about 2 volts of power in it.

With the engine running & at idle - it had roughly 14 volts going though it.

If i reved the engine, there was no change in the voltage, from ilde right up to 4k+ there was no change it stayed at 14 volts.



So i take it the battery is stuffed? With a constant feed of 14 volts it should be keeping its charge?

btw jamie, i checked the spark plugs and the area that might be 'sticky' nothing, all dry and clean as are the bolts. Looks as good as yours!  :)

sounds like a duff battery to me. The voltage regulator should stop (or at least limit) the voltage across the battery with respect to engine speed, so it sounds like that's OK. A genuine Vx "Go" battery is £43.99 inc. VAT on trade club (P/N 93176583), is maintenance free and comes with a 3 year warranty ... or it was when I bought mine about 7 weeks ago ...

Yay another problem solved... no need to remove that alternator.

Another problem appears though just as you fix on, I cannot remove the wheel nuts on any of the wheels! They seam to be jammed in solid, trying to do them the usual 'anti-clock' to untighten but they just won't budge.

Any ideas?

The wheel bolts have probably been tightend at a tyre place with an air gun. I use a large bar and stand on it but then I am a fat git [smiley=laugh.gif]

Or just play it numb at a fast fit place and get them to undo the bolts with their windy gun!

whey hey got the wheel nuts off. Used the GM socket in the boot jack kit. Then got a long bar shoved it in there which gave me much more leverage.

Job Done. Wheel off!  :D

Now just need to know how to remove the brake pads, but i will start a new thread for that....

Its funny, there realy is a technique to using a bar on tight bolts......I have seen people realy struggle on some and with a bit of practice they shouldn't need to.

£44.99 on TC i belive... just phoned Vx Banbury and they wanted £54...

Think i will have to get one from the dealer as i need it soon ish really

Good news is - problem sovled

Bad news is - costs money to fix (alternator could have been free, but probably a pain doing...)

I've now got a 2 foot breaker bar as one method of attack, and a 12 volt impact wrench as another for future use!

when refitting the wheel, apply some coppaslip (copper grease) to the shoulders of the bolts, this will stop the corrosion between the steel bolt and alloy wheel and make removal much easier in future!

you do seam to have quite a lot of 'spare' tools in there.... apart from the bike your garage is like one giant tool shed that has an automatic door!  ;D
