Gaskets and silicon sealer

Has anyone ever tried this, I read about it years ago and I used the technique on my old Sunbeam as one end manifold stud had sheared - it was fine - only had to change gasket when lifting the head.

I used it on the CD when selling due to a broken stud and it worked then.

SO what are the opinions?

I presume you proposing silicon sealant on the inlet manifold rather than the exhaust manifold!

Not a great fix, but I suspect it would work.

Never really thought of using silicon sealant, I just used the usual sealant when I did my manifold gasket.

Recommended at the parts desk.

Seems to be ok even with a missing stud.

Sealent on the manifold.....what sealent.....

Be careful with silicon sealent as it can attack some metals (i.e. copper).....

Well it worked for the 2.0CD exhaust and the manifold gasket for the Sunbeam - read it somewhere - I'll have a search tonight

Tell me more.

Had a go at replacing my passenger side exhaust manifold gasket today (without removing the engine) found one stud broken off and then had to call a halt when one other stud refused to budge and eventually rounded off.

Here's the cheeky little blighter:



As I'm now going to need the full engine out treatment (which I can't do myself) silicon sealant seems most attractive.

Did you fill the stud hole?

Did you put a bead round the edge?

Or did you lift the manifold away and use the silicon like a gasket?

I put a thin bead around each hole both sides of the gasket. Then quickly bolted down before it dried - don't know how long it will last

OK - thanks.

In my case I can't get the manifold off....I've also just read that silicon sealant can poison the lamba sensors - so not sounding quite so good now  :(
