What did you learn to drive with?
« on: 02 June 2018, 18:28:38 »

I learnt to drive on one of these when I was 11.  :y

My Dad taught me the basics and when he felt I had got the hang of it went in for a fag and a cuppa, telling me to practice stopping and starting and not just to go round and round the field. "But don't go too fast!" was his parting shot.  ::)

I didn't go fast, but I did wonder what would happen if I took my foot off the clutch suddenly.  ::)

It turns out that it's possible for an 11 year old boy to pull a wheelie with a Little Grey Fergie tractor!  :o  ::)  ;D

I was suitably chastened by the experience and my Dad was very pleased to find me trundling around very sedately when he came back.  ;)

No idea, I was running away from most of them when they ended in a hedge or similar.

I didn't learn on a tractor as such, but partially in a 1950's Humber Snipe that had no power steering, so it was very heavy to steer by way of a massive steering wheel, and to change gear you had to double de-clutch.  What fun it was though, until a tapet broke on No 3 cylinder!! ::)

The BSM driving school car was a mini which was vastly different to the Humber!  I did manage to pursuade my boss to drive his company Ford Mk2 Cortina which was fun, especially when I took to 80 mph on the A2 ;)

Oh, great days.  I still would love to drive a tractor though :y

Firstly a BSA Golden Flash (initially with a sidecar) and then a 1938 Morris 12. An early, interesting trip from Essex to Cornwall on "L" plates!  ;D 8) :y

Actually, when I truly learnt how to drive was after I passed my test.  In my case, when they gave me a clapped out little yellow Morris Ital van, £1m worth of liability (we didn't have traditional insurance, but a bond in place), and my boss's parting words were "go do your worse"

First car I drove was , I think, a Ford Pop  sit up and beg. I would be 11 or 12. It belonged to our neighbour who was two years older. It is the only car I have ever driven that you could select reverse whilst still going forward. Got to say never tried it on later cars. We had a figure of nine track. First car I owned was, I think , a Riley 1.5 . We had unofficial free use of Wykeham forest tracks. Used to help out on local farm as a young teenager. First job with a tractor was moving tractor and trailer around field while men loaded bales of straw. Graduated to driving tractor and trailer loading grain whilst  combine harvester kept harvesting. How proud I felt. If the fields were near the farm we even took the rig back to the farm to tip via public roads albeit off the beaten track. I dare say the local copper knew as he knew everything looking back.
Passed my test in my mothers Ford Anglia.

Talking of my mother. She passed her test on a motorbike and sidecar. When it came to learning to drive a car my dad said these are the controls  off you go on your own! That was a Ford Pop too that they hand painted as it was a bit rusty.

Later my dad traded that car in and asked what was going to happen to it. “ our mechanics will swarm over it and strip it of parts then it will be scrapped. “ how much will you get for it? £15. So my dad bought it back and gave it to me. First mod was to fit a 1200 cc engine £10 guaranteed ( the scrapyard stamped it !”. Did me well as a student

Gosh happy days a thousand years ago. I had a good childhood.

I had a go at nicking my Dads car by releasing the handbrake on the hill outside our house when I was about six. Apart from that, I learned to drive in the HB Viva he bought me, to keep me off motorbikes, with him sat nervously beside me.
Didn't have any actual lessons, just got the hang of it and then went and took my test.

Just been watching a couple of Edgar Wallace B-Feature films from the 1960s; poor dramas, but great for spotting some of today's actors in minor roles and, especially, the cars of the period used as street furniture.
I did manage to identify most of them!  :-[

As i had a motorbike first, (Greeves 250cc twin road bike), my first "car" was a Reliant Regal soft top, which i could drive on my bike licence. Drove that for about three years and by then my Dad had a Mk 1 Viva. It luckily had a very similar gearbox layout to the three wheeler, so, Dad gave me a few runs out and i passed my test in that. Probably couldn,t go down the self taught route these days, as it seems all driving school orientated now. ???

Unknown to my parents, at 13 on a Bedford(?) 3 ton tipper lorry on private roads around our house and grounds, which was a market garden business situated within what used to be the Duke of Grafton's Wakefield Lodge estate. http://www.parksandgardens.org/places-and-people/site/7584?preview=1
Whenever possible, I would 'borrow' one of the business vehicles, and drive all over the estate, also on to quiet public roads when I felt brave. I also 'borrowed' my step-father's Ariel Square 4 combination for the same.
Since driving is essentially a required life skill nowadays, I feel all youngsters at 13 on should have the opportunity to drive on private roads, preferably under supervision  ::). I taught both mine on a local disused airfield, for which they were both very grateful.
I passed my test in a '55 sit up and beg Ford Pop. :y

I started on a little grey Ferguson tractor (yesterday I went to the North Bucks Country Show...could not resist it, I had to sit on one. Brought back many memories)
My first road car I learnt in and passed my test in was a 1964 Morris 1100. :y Also had a few drives of dad's Austin A50 ;)

I had an Austin A50 terbs. Lovely comfy bench front seat and a very sloppy column gear change. Absolute rust bucket too. ;D

I learned unofficially in father's upright Ford 10. On turning seventeen I put L plates on the family Austin A40 Somerset, mother sat beside me, and I drove around. Passed my test within 6 weeks.

I am still learning to drive after 61 years, now in Vauxhall Omegas. Every fright, every error, is another lesson.

I used to drive a mates Chevette on his dads private air strip, probably about age 12-13.

And it was a private airstrip, the old runway and peri trach at Gartree as his family owned the farm there.

I learnt Clutch control on a Lambretta 200 on the Beach. (Owned by 3 of us aged 15)
I Passed a moped test 5 weeks after getting it, and without opening the highway code.
On my first lesson in a Car (by my Mum) I drove from Liverpool to Coniston In the Lakes, on the A Roads. In a Y reg Beige dangly mirror base model estate of the 1.6 sierra variety.
I knew the way. I'd ridden it on a Moped.
I obviously failed my Car test first time as I was a cocky bugger, who had never opened the highway code.

First car I ever drove was a 1978 Austin Allegro 1100S (no quartic steering wheel) which was, coincidentally, a driving instructors car; but not my instructor, because I was about 12 and it was my grandfathers car.

I actually learnt to drive in a Corsa B, circa 1995. No idea what the reg was. But once I'd passed, that Allegro became my first car.. still complete with dual controls!

Passed car and bike test in 1977. The Queen decided to throw street parties all over the country. Nice touch I thought. :)

This was when you could pass your bike test on a 100 MPH 250.......and not a nancy boy 125 like today.

I believe Opti they introduced a 250cc  limit for learners-unless you had a chair[sidecar]strapped to the side of it-to stop young riders killing themselves on the bigger bikes,so all the[mainly Japanese]manufacturers did was make 250s that went faster and some were evil handling things with it.Although I really liked the look of the Kawasaki 250 two stroke triple they called the Samurai.

I came very close to dying on one of those. I loved them though, especially the 500 triple. It had a vicious powerband, no brakes and a frame made from plasticine. Very exciting.  ;D

Got my first bike at 17, a tatty Honda 250 K1 and took & passed my test about 9 months later, then progressed to a wideline Triton 650 and then replaced that with a 750cc Triumph Trident T150V. Bought a Reliant plastic pig van to learn to drive a car and as soon as I passed my test bought a 2.5l Ford Consul estate. :y

I 'rolled' two plastic pigs in my youth.

A 700 cc  Supervan and a 600 cc Regal saloon.

These days I like 4 wheels. One in each corner. :)
