Title: Sunroof Seal
Post by: tunnie on 13 July 2018, 20:45:32
It’s not leaking, but there is an awful lot of wind noise from the front of it. I’ve had it open a few times in hot weather, to cool car down quicker. Sure it’s noiser, perhaps not sealed as well. Nice steady 85mph cruise, I had to close the blind it’s that annoying.

Does look all cracked and such, it is a 16 years old...

Easy to replace? Worth doing?

It's a draught excluder rather than a seal...

Might struggle to obtain it separately from the sunroof...

Hummmm. Damn. As its a draft excluder, maybe a bodge, but black tape along front? Tempting to put silicone sealer and just pull fuse so it's longer useable.

Would silicone GREASE be a better bet? It won't wash off in the rain (unless it's a tempest!) and should cut down on the noise.

Should it be exposed 24/7 though  :-\

To answer that fully I would need to see the data sheets on the grease, but off the cuff I don't see why not. It doesn't degrade when exposed to UV (sunlight) nor high temperatures - it is commonly used as a heat transfer medium in electronics.

take out the sunroof glass and clean the felt covered rubber get the hard debry of it. this stops the rubber part from expanding and contracting. rub some silicon grease for rubber on the area on the felt. and refit the sunroof glass. would be fine as long as its not split or cracked around the seal between the alloy top and the metal bottom. its held in place with screws and screen bond with the rubber seal in the middle. soaking some rag in vinegar will remove the mold that can accumulate but dont leave it on for to long.

Thanks all. I’ll give it a clean up and some silicone grease, see if that helps.  :y

Yup, remove glass completely and clean it up.

Suspect giving you don't wash it properly, its in a poor state, but should be recoverable

Silly question i know and you have no doubt checked this but is it closing fully or does it need a reset? . I have found with mine that it doesnt need to be lifted much untill you hear wind noise .

I did wonder, I opened and closed it. Seal looks right, just an aging/cracking

There may be a good chance that you can get an aftermarket seal from Mid Kent trim Supplies.
He has remade fraud seals for some time and now does Manta Monza Senator sunroof seals.

The official Vauxhall line is (I think) 1mm below the roofskin at the front, 2mm up at the rear, so the whole thing is very, very slightly angled 'down' like a spoiler. Adjusted wrong this can generate wind noise. Theoretically sunroofs are plentiful, most Omegas had them, should you wish to change.

I think the grease you actually need is an expensive stuff called Krytox. Its used in a number of German cars and don't think VX/Opel in Germany where the cars were made would be any different. You can get it as an oil or grease. The muts nuts for rubber seals.

I found some in a double glazing shop ( in a long tube for a gun) for securing the rubber seals to the window frames, when they fit them in. but most car parts shop usually have the 12g tubes in.

You can't say that here! There's bound to be some Vauxhall only potion made from powdered unicorn horn and elf toenail clippings, blended with virgin's blood, mixed by the Wicked Witch of the North in a cloud city, that only costs £4908 on TC

But it just randomly opened the other day while driving along  :-\

Done a search but struggling to find previous topics, but know it has been discussed.

Before ripping the Sunroof apart I would suggest a Full Recycle in every Postilion whist holding the Button down for at least 5 seconds when Parked in each Position, may not cure the Disk Cleaning problem if it is that, but could solve a simple needs a reset issue..

Will try that, it has performed as expected in the various settings.  :y
