This story has revealed that he is actually autistic, which I suppose, answers some questions about his unconventional behaviour and high level of natural intelligence (as opposed to highly educated) as autistic people often seem to be ime.
I have wondered if Joey Dunlop was also in the same boat, as he was not dissimilar, although in a much quieter understated way.
It would have been very easy to mistake him for a mumbling inarticulate Irish bogtrotter, but he was a self taught engineering genius.
No-one could get reliability and power from a two stroke engine like Joey. Not even the combined might of Yamaha and the research department of Queens University.
