Leave it as it is if its gas tight, and just let it run on 3 new ones it will be fine, did the same on an Astra a few years back.

That's what I would do too if car doesn't have big value,you may need to connect a plug to the spare wire to keep the mil light out.

No consolation to you but it's only been Vauxhall glows that I've ever really struggled to remove

Joff/henryd, will this affect its willingness to start on cold mornings? As recently, its been an arse to start, and it hasn't really got cold yet.

Three new plugs may well be more efficient than four old ones - may as well try it before trying to get the remains out, since you'll end up having to replace that one regardless. IMHO.

Have you got the other 3 out ?

I never had any problems running on the 3 new ones I put in and that year it was down to -10C

Other 3 came straight out, no issues.

I haven't actually snapped the plug clean off yet, can I connect the wire to this, or is that likely to pop a fuse etc?

Try it and see but it'll start fine on three plugs

on mine it was just turning but not unscrewing, think the wire inside was still connected, so I just put the plug back on it and left it,

It will start fine with 3 new ones and after a couple of revolutions the fourth will be ok.

Have you blown the fuse?

TBH diesels don't really need glow plugs in this country, doesn't get cold enough...

On my old merc C220, that had 3 blown glowplugs before I changed them and I only changed them, because I was selling the thing and wanted the warning light off. It still started ok in the winter....just took a bit longer cranking...few secs longer.

My skoda Octavia is the same....turn the key and immediately start cranking....it starts but it takes it a couple of secs longer than if I wait for the glowplug light to go off

Before I did my Superb, it had 1 of the 6 working and started fine after a few revolutions, kicked out a bit of smoke though which was fun. It should start ok on 3 new ones.

Worth checking with a meter what's occurring,if the one that's sheared has gone dead short it will bugger the rest I would have thought,disconnect duff one and see if things improve

OK, EML on with glow plug connected and disconnected. Jury still out if it starts easier with it connected or not (it was harder this morning with glow plug disconnected, but then it was pretty nippy out).

For EML, I guess the old one has to come out, which I suspect puts the car in the scrapyard territory

I can't see why,how would the ecu know if its lying on top of the head or screwed into it unless it needs to be grounded via the threads

Its a separate ECU, not diagnosable, thus one useless, poxy code to go on.

Think the wire has gone in the old plug then!!! I was lucky the wire was ok but the plug did not work, no EML on the one I had.
