General Discussion Area / Government debt and interest rates
« on: 14 January 2015, 22:35:26 »
I received a letter today that Government is going to redeem the 1932 War Stock.

A bit of the end of an era as the holding has been passed on within family.

Interest rates make this attractive to the Government.

General Discussion Area / Xbox One Steering Wheel
« on: 08 January 2015, 22:42:36 »
I am after a decent wheel for Forsa 5 - the new xbox one release from Microsoft is £400 so forget that.

I am not a gamer - it is really for a bit of family fun but reports on the Argos type wheels are patchy.

Any ideas for something sub £100 please? are they wireless?

I have never bought a wheel for games before.

General Discussion Area / Ebay mobile phone purchase
« on: 03 January 2015, 10:55:07 »
I needed a new Blackberry just to pair with Phaeton built in phone system (as windows phones and iPhones etc do not work on pre 2011 systems) and went onto ebay.

A used Blackberry smartphone Q10 model popped up and seller had posted many photos of the cosmetic damage. I got it for £102 in the ebay auction. It arrived and I have got rid of half the marks in the photos by using just my finger nail?? Bizarre.

General Car Chat / Decisions decisions - extend car warranty or not
« on: 23 December 2014, 13:01:44 »
Phaeton is 5 years old today. Nothing has gone wrong other than service items and that means just the tyres. Two bulbs went when under warranty a couple of years ago but that happened the day before the service!!

I bought a warranty for years 4 and 5 from Warranty Wise for £420 a year which I have not had to call on.

Now of course at 5 years old the price is £70 a month for 1 year or £61 a month for 3 years.

If anything does go wrong it will be mega expensive eg - brake discs all round at a dealer will be £1100 which are not covered as a service item of course  - should I go indie???

Arguably to run a car like this for £61 a month plus your service items and road tax and fuel  is not bad value but it still narks. For that money I have a max single repair of £5000 no excess and no limit on number of claims, £200 per hour labour rate, and airbags, multimedia etc covered. Unlimited mileage as well.

Don't like to pay out for this but sod's law tells me that I am now entering the vulnerable years and if I don't do it I will get a problem.

On Phaeton website quite a mixed bag of views as you would expect but at £61 a month some think it is a no brainer to go for a warranty.

General Car Chat / Tyres
« on: 18 December 2014, 19:14:17 »
At the end of Oct 2014 I had Phaeton serviced (main dealer) and front tyre tread reported ok at 3mm. Just took it for mot today and it has done 1500 miles since service.

One tyre now condemned as down to cord on inner edge. Not happy. Now 2 tyres to be fitted and alignment check. Clearly not taking tyres seriously at service and must have been running around with illegal tyre for months. Was also checked by same garage in May.

Tyre looks great over main areas of tread.

General Discussion Area / 40th wedding anniversary next week
« on: 26 November 2014, 22:30:00 »
We will celebrate in Cornwall where Mrs. family are all based. Shame her parents aren't alive to share. A bit frightening to reflect on how quickly those years have gone by.

General Car Chat / One for Jason

If police attended a traffic accident, took statements etc and intended to prosecute one of the drivers would there be a time limit in which they needed to give notice of intended prosecution - i.e. how many days after the incident?

I took the advice of guys on here and installed Windows 7 Professional on the PCs of my new office - for reasons I will not go into this is a saving of £4000 against a budget.

However, whilst I thought Office 365  Business Premiumwould be problem free in terms of  sharing data across devices linked to my user name - sadly not so.

Microsoft will support syncing of emails via IMAP irrespective of email service provider - they create obstacles on sharing /transfer of contacts and calendars - pain in the ass.

What is microsoft's justification here if you do not want to use their exchange server/active sync?

General Car Chat / prang in Insignia - police called
« on: 29 October 2014, 10:47:17 »
My wife stopped at lights and young girl in fiesta hit rear of insignia slap bang in middle. Fiesta crumpled and is a write off. Insignia has bumper and tailgate damage and one quarter panel looks bowed but given the impact it stood up well and was driveable once I kicked off the plastic lower skirt trailing on ground.

An "independent" witness appeared on scene and said to upset young girl "do not worry it is not your fault - it is her (my wife's) fault - you thought she was going through and so did I". Witness called police and gave a statement to them which obviously we do not know content. Fiesta had a young driver black box on board.

So all statements taken, nobody injured and details exchanged.

This morning the young girl's insurers have accepted full responsibility and will pay for everything.

We will now have to wait and see if police take it further.

Witness was very pally seemingly with young driver and her family when they turned up. Thankfully we did not get involved in accusations and counter accusations

General Discussion Area / Windows 7 v Windows8.1
« on: 19 October 2014, 18:29:28 »
I am setting up a new small office in London. Conflicting advice is being offered but the requirements are modest and will just will be for word, excel, outlook, PowerPoint and Access with quick books accounting package and little in the way of publisher stuff. I feel myself 8.1 is the way forward and that the IT professionals are peddling windows 7 as a safe option just because they are used to it and it is a no risk recommendation.

We are talking 4 pcs, nas drive and normal speed broadband with no mega computing or security requirements.

Would appreciate any views as I need to order all the kit this week (all cat 6 and power is in) as builders finish Friday next.

I am proposing to use Googlemail for flexibility and cost.

General Discussion Area / WW1 centenary commemoration
« on: 03 August 2014, 23:01:05 »
I happened to know (believe) that Prime Minister Asquith signed the Declaration of War on 4th August 1914 at his home in Sutton Courtney, Oxfordshire.

So on my way back from the North I called in to find the house and his grave in local church.

I was a bit surprised that asking locals proved that they were not familiar with Asquith's house even though when I eventually found it myself it had a plaque to confirm that Asquith lived there.

I asked at one of the local pubs if anything was being done on the WW1 front tomorrow and was told no not that we know of we are shut tomorrow. Seems to be a village event missed.

George Orwell's grave (but with his real name on gravestone - Eric Arthur Blair) was in same graveyard.

General Discussion Area / HMRC
« on: 07 June 2014, 13:41:29 »
My mother is coming up 88 and in a nursing home. Letter from HMRC today telling her she has underpaid her tax for last year by......£12. there ought to be a de minimus rule.

32 years banking with Lloyds. Went to downgrade my account from Private Premier etc etc to a basic one as I do not need all the services. Ended up just walking out as they said this would not be straight forward and I would have no cards for a time and direct debits may be affected!!

Will move the lot to Santander - including Business Accounts. Everything will migrate across relatively seamlessly. Plus 3% interest on each current account.

What a shower Lloyds are.

General Car Chat / Breakdown Cover - Multiple Cars
« on: 27 May 2014, 12:53:14 »
I was going to add this post to the running multiple cars thread but it may warrant separate consideration.

I have AA cover with the Bank which is driver based so no need for separate cover but there is obviously an account fee which for the purpose of this post I will say is £17.50 a month. The cover applies to my wife and myself

If I go for a vehicle based policy as opposed to driver based then obviously with 5 insured drivers on each car there is more piece of mind for any insured driver of the car. I can get the Insignia and Omega on good home start cover with long distance recovery and courtesy car for £99 per year the pair. This leaves the Phaeton with VW Assistance and European Recovery and Accommodation at £125 per year.

Is the decision what to do in future really as broad as it is long??

Banks have been heavily criticised for these monthly account fees - eg mobile phone insurance which is now quite limited compared to the insurance offered by EE, and I get Travel Insurance through work etc but these deal may make sense for some.
