Replacing CV Boot on Zafira
« on: 27 November 2016, 15:48:08 »

Outboard boot split on Zaffy, anyone know the steps to follow to replace it, and if it needs and special tools?

Got a broken front spring as well, is that a simple case of following same steps as an Omega?

The boot will be easy with the shock removed. Assuming that you remembered to undo the hub nut before jacking the car up. How long has the boot been split?

Good spring compressors are essential.

Not sure how long its been split, noticed it a 2 or 3 weeks ago, not had chance to look at it.  It hasn't done many miles since I noticed, no clonking on full lock etc.

Depends if your using a genuine part or a stretch fit boot. I know what purists will say, but if your careful a stretch boot will last long enough and saves the trouble of splitting the cv joint, which in turn means you can do the job with the drive shaft still fitted at the inboard end.

I have never, ever had to change a boot in my life, so I'm using my imagination what a stretch boot is.  I will likely use whatever a convenient factors can supply.

Apologies for sounding a bit dumb.

Actually, that's almost a lie - on the 25, I have to change the ABS rings, and it was easier to change the entire CV joint...  ...but that was driveshafts out anyway.  I seem to recall it was a bit of a mare of a job, partly because I was doing it in sub zero temps after work across 2 or 3 winter evenings :(

If using a stretch boot, can be bought with the cone for under £10, you just need to pop the outboard end of the drive shaft out of the hub, remove the old boot and grease, work the new grease into the joint, cut the new boot to the same length as the old boot, turn the new stretch boot inside out, slide it onto the cone using the cone lube, put the cone over the end of the shaft, slide the boot over the cv joint and then turn it the right way round, clip it in place and resemble the shaft back into the hub, job done.

They exactly what they say they are http://www.stretchcvboot.com/cv-boots/ (US site) But by the time the drive shaft comes off the hub, you're only a tug away from removing the drive shaft from the gearbox .. they're only held in with a spring clip, and you might as well do it properly.
Last time I did one was years ago on SWMBO's Hyundai. Hyundai wanted £30odd just for the boot ... I got one from my mate's motor factor that was 'about' the same size for £3

Just get a decent quality boot and bring it up.  will chuck it on for you.

What little you save with a flexi its not worth bothering with.

Especially if it's not the only job you're doing on the suspension.

Will be after Tech2 to enable my cruise once I've got round to fitting the stalk - I'll drop you line if that's okay?

Thing with the flexi boots is that you still need to pull the joint from the hub, remove the old boot and replace the old grease so the only additional operation is the circlip to hold the CV joint on.

Got any spring compressors, as I need to do front spring at same time...

Not knowing how long its been split for, is there a way to tell if CV has survived?  No clicking on full lock, but at ramming speed yesterday, sounded like a speed related wheel bearing type noise, but it was a headwind, and that car does suffer windnoise.

Think I've got some if you need them - just round the corner
