Black Omega MOT Failure
« on: 04 September 2006, 08:17:50 »

Well it went into the garage on Saturday for its test and a few thing I checked came up on the tick sheet.

O/s and N/s Front Brake discs corroded
O/s or N/s rear coil cant remember
O/s and N/s rear brake pipes
One fog light low output
Front Wishbones rear bushes excessive wear.

Now I dont think it faired too badly but I need to get the above work done for next weekend when its being retested.

Can the rear brake pipes be bought pre made?
With the wishbones I guess replace the whole thing or are the rear bushes easiest to replace?
Rear Coil how easy are they to remove only may visit a scrappy for that?
Brake discs I shall be contacting autovaux to day.

Any Advice given would be much appreciated.

I believe it is recommended to change both springs together (in the same way as shocks etc). Luckily, springs are now a TC item...

Probably easier to replace wishbones, no longer TC so genuine parts are expensive.

Cheers for the response TheBoy

Shall seek out the recommended supplier on Ebay for the Wishbones, the springs from a scrappy I know where there is a white one in a scrappy so hopefully no one has nabbed the springs off it, am I right to think one size fits all. Is it the recommended to buy these new.

The biggest bug bearer is the rear brake pipes can these be bought pre made only the garage who tested said they can make them but I think I need them sooner.

As the springs have a habit of breaking due to corrosion, if you're keeping car stick a pair of new Vx ones one (around £120 ish + VAT on TC iirc). 2 main types, normal and lowered sports (ie MV6)

Just checked EPC re pipes, looks like in comes on reel, so not preformed. The rears in particular may be challenging to fit if they were preformed anyway...

I think its a quick fix it needs as I think its going to be sold on afterwards.

Shall see what the prices are like on Ebay I think.

Been ringing around a few places for prices to get the above parts through autovaux it will cost £350 all in.

Also been looking on Ebay and can get wishbones and front discs + pads £111 all in.
Contacted lisles vauxhall and was told the brake pipes about £22 for both sides pre made with new connectors.

Spoke to a scrappy earlier and they have a couple of omega's in so shall hopefully get another coil for the rear.

My only trouble is the brake pipes will take 2 days and possibly the stuff from Ebay will take 2 days aswell and it all needs doing for saturday morning for its retest.

How long should it take to do the front wishbones at a rough guess

Great :)

Any responses would be much appreciated

If nothing is seized, wishbones probably around 3hrs per side if you've never done before...

While you have the WD handy give the rear shock bottom mounts a good soaking, you have to undo these to get spring out and they tend to stick in the trailing arm.
To remove rear spring:

Jack-up, both wheels hanging.
Remove clip fixing brake pipe to trailing arm.
Unclip rear abs sensors from body
Undo bottom shock mount
Support diff on jack, unbolt rear subframe mounts from body
Edit: undo rear silencer rubbers and lower exhaust slightly, tie up with wire etc
Lower diff jack until spring is free, watch out for the brake pipe and abs cables.

Replacement is the reverse etc etc.

Cheers Issunaz

As its looking very unlikely the car will be ready for the weekend for its retest I am having to cancel still atleast I know what needs doing.

Pete

You mention in your short guide to be careful with regards the brake pipes I am guessing there is the risk of them snapping still even if this does happen atleast I am replacing them anyway just got to worry about the fluid going everywhere if it was to happen.
