tyre ?

when buying tyres what rating is the best to get for regular motorway usage. its been suggested " V " , advise pls  :y

The owners handbook [for the 2.2 petrol-don't know if diesels would differ]says 94V tyres.HTH.

When I asked my tyrefitter / MOT tester about 15 years ago I was told it was a load rating (not just speed).

Doctor Gollum is right though - it will be in the manual.........

V speed rating is 149mph.  If you drive faster than that Ray, then go higher W 168 mph or Y 186 mph.   ::)  ;D

I cannot imagine tyres are the limiting factor in achieveing any of those speeds in an elderly mig  ;D

Regardless of the speed limit, the tyres need to at least match the maximum attainable speed AND maximum axle rates of any given vehicle.

This is why winter tyres often come with a significantly lower speed limit as they are often only H rated.

Also a 3.0/3.2 Omega will cruise on the naughty side of 140mph.

Fit under rated tyres and watch what happens if you're involved in a prang. Regardless of fault you're uninsured and instantly guilty of driving a defective vehicle.

You MUST match or exceed what the manufacturer states, irrespective of speed you drive at.

In most cases, not doing so will null and void the insurance.

This applies to speed and load ratings.


The single exception is Z rated, where in many cases Y is permissible

I think I might need zome stickier ones for the xe. It's a lot easier to get it out of shape on acceleration than the Omega.   ::)

Hmm. Dunno. When I drive off in the morning they are black and round enough not to cause any issues, so I haven't looked much. :-[

My XJ doesn't have much more power than your XE Kevin Wood, and I suspect they are a lot wider, but its still a bit tail happy coming out of bends, even on my idea of decent rubber.

Mind you, in this weather with leaves, grime and rain, even the Battlebus goes sideways when taking evasive action when some duffer in a Nissan decides to use the left lane to do a complete U-Turn on a fast roundabout. Don't ask how I know.
