When changing the oil on a VAG 2.0 TDi, how much oil should I expect to put back in? Yes the book can tell me on paper how much the engine holds, but this tends to differ from what comes out on an oil change.

I've bought a 5L bottle of 5w30, just wanted to check this would be enough.

I hope your car comes with a good old-fashioned dipstick. Something you can see the colour of the oil against.

I have a 'readout' instead which is not progress.

Oil in any diesel engine will be black after a few hundred miles.


But I'm with on you on the lack of a dipstick: it's a stupid idea.

Think yourself lucky tunnie, the only dipstick in my car is the one holding the steering wheel! 

I agree it is an utterly pointless "feature" to include it on the computer thingy

The slightest gradient will have it reading anything from overfull to needs two litres.

Apparently mine will just tell me when I need to "add 1L of oil in in the next 500miles" pushing the button to check the oil level makes the car go through a cycle of varying engine revs which lasts 20-30sec, it will then report back on the oil level. Beggered if I know what its doing.

For the interim oil changes (no way I'm letting 2yr/20,000 mile old oil whizz round the turbocharger!) I am just going to measure what comes out, add a bit for the filter and put that amount back in and await my command to add 1L.

The whole thing is a huge leap backwards. Tyre pressure monitoring OTOH, is dead handy

Dipstick on mine 

Have to check the book, some forums suggest as little as 3.8 litres goes back in 

Then just pour it in until the dipstick reads full, run it for a minute, stop and top up if required.

Until it goes wrong, as you need to take out a mortgage to replace the sensors!

Same as everything else on new cars, other than the real basic ones that is, and a Dacia Sandero never really was to my tastes  .

Although I have circa 6yrs before I need to worry about it (warranty covers them and battery life is stated as around 10yrs) and tbh I doubt I'll keep the car that long, I never have kept one that long before and doubt I'll start now!

I'm at a point in life now where the balance of time has shifted such that I would rather pay the monthlies and have none of the work. Now that my job takes much more out of me than it used to, time with family is more important than saving the money on doing work myself on cars, but I do recognise I'm fortunate to be in a position to be able to choose.
