Limp Mode
« on: 22 August 2016, 10:23:56 »

Morning guys,
Back from there last week.
Elite in for MOT this morning.
Yesterday I drove about 15 miles and the car went into limp mode. I noticed that the temp gauge went up slightly but nothing to worry about. Checked oil, coolant levels and everything seems to be in order. Started her up again, back to normal until a couple of miles then started to misfire again. Managed to get home by turning on the heater to keep temp down.
Plugged ELM in and there were no trouble codes indicated.
Any ideas on this guys?
TIA  :y

I suppose the obvious, standard V6 stuff - check the plugwells for oil, then check HT leads/DIS pack (or the combined things that the 2.6/3.2s have) etc.  :-\

If it went into limp (EML on), there will be a code.

Definitely no trouble codes TB. I have a cheapo reader which does work as I have found out in the past. The car runs fine until the temp goes up then runs on 3? cylinders, turn on heater to drop the temp and she runs fine again. Also the EML light flashes for a while then stays on until the temp drops. Going for a run this morning, so will see what happens.

She passed the MOT yesterday with no advisories.  :y

Good news on MOT, but means nothing in this case.

Flashing EML on a 2.6/3.2 is emissions related, so fuel trims and/or misfires (which may or may not be same cause anyway).

Does your software allow viewing of live data (as the unit is quite generic)?, if so, check LTFT for both banks, BEFORE clearing codes (clearing codes on these resets the trims)

Ok TB,

LTFT Bank 1-7%
LTFT Bank 2-4.7%

Still no trouble codes indicated

As if that's petrol, you've gotta problem.  If petrol, what is the MAF reading, in kg/hr

It's petrol TB.

The MAF is reading 3.00 g/s

Double check my maths, that's 10.8Kg/hr?

Which would explain the trims being buggered.

If my maths is right, check for air leaks in the intake, then if no improvement, replace the MAF.

Hi TB,
I found one of the jubilee clips on the inlet pipes was loose on the right hand side bank.
I created a trouble code and cleared using my cheapo naff reader.
I went for a run yesterday and took more readings this morning and this is the result.
Is there anything you can see that is out of kilter?

TIA  :y

That looks like its running VERY cool at 49C after a decent run ...... if the "true" temp is up around 90C on the gauge like it should be then possibly the temp sensor for the ECU is fubarred, but beyond that there are marked differences in fuel trims and O2 sensors between banks

Entwood! I only run the engine for a little while just to check the LTFT's, so the temp was not up to normal. It was the day before that I gave it a run after clearing the TC's. I have a new thermostat in and it works ok.
I will have to give it another run and get the ELM on it again.
So it looks like the problem still exists.

If its petrol (LPG mapping is always a compromise), the LTFTs should always be 0.0%.
