Not sure how much it will affect things, but the car needs to be level, too, but raised up enough to fit underneath the get the oil in. We just managed, but only because we're lanky, underfed skinny buggers!  :)

You're welcome. Fat blocks of wood and axle stands etc can add a couple of vital inches  :)

I jack each side of the car, and lower it onto 4 steel wheels. Even the tiny 4.5x12" spares for my sister's Morris are enough to allow secure and easy(ish) access under the car

Ok. That's probably your issue. Any time you have the filler plug out of the gearbox, the engine must be running, as a lot of fluid drains back into the sumps when it's stopped and the level is calibrated for the scenario when the engine is running.

So, support it level, start the engine, cycle it through each position on the gear stick, get underneath and remove the plug, top up the level until it starts to dribble out of the filler plug hole, put the plug back in, then stop the engine.

The smell of different oils. Hypoid gear oil is for the final drive or differential

Dex 3 has a stronger oily smell and hypoid is sulphurous and you dont want it in you hair youll smell it for days
