Weekend meet in York - Preliminary planning
« on: 28 July 2008, 19:31:47 »

Right, as you all know, I have been thinking about a big meet in York for a while...

I've spoken to a few members on here, and they like the idea of a weekend meet, which would also be suitable for the whole family too.

I have found a few places that 'should' be suitable for this meet (don’t know about cost / availability yet). The idea been that we hire the entire site to make it a private event, or at least a section

This would allow the following to happen:

  • General Meet up
  • BBQ's + Beer!
  • Repairing / Servicing the Migs (I’ve got a generator which I can bring + lots of tools etc)
  • Trading spare parts
  • Meeting new members
  • Not worry about disturbing other people (noise wise mainly)
  • Visit to good old York! lmao!
  • Retail park down the road

Now for this to happen, and be successful, I need to know how many cars would be attending an event like this. And when the event should take place.

I plan on getting hold of BIG tents and gazebos, where cars can be driven inside / undercover which should handy when fixing them.

I could do with giving the car a service, changing the rocker gaskets and sticking a new cam belt kit on it.

So... What do you lot think of the meet idea? When do you think this meet should take place? And how many people am I expecting to see?

Lets make this a big one!  :D :y

Cheers for the pm Ian. I'd be up for attending but organizing a big meet is competing with the Lakes & Newent meets which are already established. We have to bear in mind time off work & expense after 2 big meets have already taken place etc. On the plus side however such a meet may attract members in the Lincs/Yorks/Lancs/N.E areas who might enjoy an autumn meet, maybe Sept/Oct, so not too hot or cold to cater for all. Might rain a little but gazebos can cover work areas, BBQ's etc. Also might interest those who would've attended Lakes/Newent but had to take families on hols elsewhere hence could attend a later meet.
    Comments/ideas please? :)

Yes thats my biggest worry, its got to be either before the newent meet, or after the newent meet... The downside is the longer we leave it, the colder it gets! Now this doesn't bother me, however if its a familiy event its better if its still warm.

I understand spring/autumn may be too cold for some folk & children, so it's either a meet for the more rough & ready amongst us, both Lakes & Newent are family friendly so there's already 2 meets each year which cater for families.
To start another big meet we can either pitch it as a risk of bad weather event ie April or October, or try to host it in the summer anyway, not to compete with Lakes/ Newent but maybe for more local folk who do'nt fancy a longer drive so would'nt have attended Lakes/Newent anyway...just a thought, Guy.

Are we not pushing it a bit for a 'big' meet this year. :(
Why not just have a day meet this year and then look into a big meet next year, not clashing with those already set up obviously.
just my two penneth :y

I was looking at the bigger picture hence April next year or October this year but as i said the two big meets are established now, so hoping to find a "niche market". Something bigger than the recent meet @ mine but on a lesser scale than Lakes/Newent. An inbetweenie if you like. It's Ians baby, just adding some ideas. :)

I guess it depends on what you call a big meet!

Maybe I should word it 'decent sized' meet?

I’m not expecting everyone turning up, it was more of a Yorkshire + joining counties really. Just thought that a weekend away maybe a bit different for people who cant make the meets at the lakes / newent (I’ve never been to either of them before, and cant make it this year due to work, so I’ve no idea how many cars are going!)

As for numbers, I don’t know??? Over a dozen or so people would be a good start tbh. However on the other hand, I don’t exactly want to hire a field, and set big tents up here and there for only three cars to turn up though!

Would be nice to meet up with fellow owners and swap ideas etc.

Right, we need to get this meet sorted fairly sharpish as the days are getting shorted and colder!  :(

Would any of these dates suit anyone? 13-14, 20-21, 27-28 (September sat-sun)

What do we all think?

Got a few places in mind, and just thought of somewhere else which is semi under cover... only problem is I dont know if theres any grass for us to put tents up on!  :-/

Hi Ian. Have you found a site? I can make any weekend & will attend if you know where we're going. Markey Mark's still in Cypruss but he'll come. Start a list, put me & you down to start the ball rolling, then post site details, prices soon as.
READY, STEADY, KICK UP THE ARSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Get your names on Ians list so he knows how many to book for & be quick about it, we need names before we can book the venue. Still time if you get your fingers out. 8-)

I can only attend the last weekend in Sept as I'm in France and Spain for my holidays.
If its that weekend then I'll have my pikey palace, generator and gas bbq there if needed!

Gas bbq could be very handy...

Generator wise, ive got a 4kw one, again the more the better though maybe?

I can get hold of big tents / marquee / gazebos too.  :)
