Help Request
« on: 21 April 2015, 11:39:06 »

Hi guys.

Is there anyone around who could fit an alternator for me?

I can't afford to take my miggy to the garage as they want £343 for the job.

I'm a bit stuck as I bought some furniture off eBay for my new house and I can't collect it.

Can anyone help a damsel in distress?

Thanks very much. :y

Its actually a 120amp alternator so will fit ,unlike listing which states its a 100amp.

Why waste money if James has offered you a FOC unit ?

I don't think James can do the job due to work commitments so I won't see him to get the part.

Understand.

Might be far cheaper getting the old unit removed and having it tested.Had a fault with mine last year and took it off and to old school auto electricians shope local.Guy tested it and confirmed regulator pack was faulty and replacement would cost £28=50 and when I had fitted it take it back and he will confirm all charging correctly.

Took about 1 hour to remove old unit...20 mins to replace regulator ..then another 1 hour to replace ..total cost less than £30 and a very straight forward job.Didnt even need to lift car on jack as you can remove the terminals at the back once mounting bolts are removed and you can swivel unit around enough.

Honestly its really straight forward and sure within your ability ...especially if cash is tight  ;)

Errr  where does £300+ come from? The last one I had (on the 2.6 about 12 months ago) was £164 exchange from VX.

Still cheaper to get old unit tested as probably the regulator and at less than £30 its a whole lot cheaper especially given Kate,s finances

I had one go a few years back on a V6 on the way to Birmingham, just about made where I going and was up there for a few days, so was a bit knackered for doing any DIY, found a local Garage and they offered to fit a Scraper or a recon one if I left the car with them for the day.

They sorted it with one from a scrapper, which they sorted, and fully fitted and tested, job done. £75 all in. :y

I spent the money that I thought I was going to have to shell out on a few Beers and a Brum Curry.  ;)

That's an excellent price. :y

The Basingstoke Auto Centre price is more than the car cost. :o

That's very good advice but I'm useless with cars. I usually just end up making the car even more broken. ;D

If you can wait until Thursday eve I will know for sure whether or not I'm free Friday?

No harm posting you the alternator sooner if you need it?

As said, it's normally the regulator when these fail, and that's simple to change, but results in the car being off the road for longer than a simple alternator swap, unless you know the style of regulator and get hold of one in advance. IIRC the style of alternator changed around the facelift time, or possibly when the 2.5/3.0 engines were phased out.

If you can get hold of a 2nd hand alternator, you can swap it and then fit a new regulator to the old one so you have a spare. Regs are cheap - only £20 or so.

If James can't sort it and you can get your hands on a replacement I may have some time to spare early next week.

The other thing that occurred to me is that an auto electrical specialist might be a better bet, as they will be able to take it off the car, test it, fit a new regulator and replace rather than just fit a new whole alternator. There always used to be a place behind the garage on the A340 in Sherborne St. John. It sticks in my mind as he always had an Omega outside. Might be worth a try?
