head gasket gone .
« on: 23 April 2015, 15:39:25 »

:'(  afternoon all I have a 2.2 omega estate and while on the way to work last night it decided to run a little ruff on 2 cylinders . While taking it easy the temperature climbed higher than normal after nursing it to work and doing a 11 hour shift I came back to the car and had a look at it . Topped it up with water and started fine so decided to take a drive home .
Anyway while on way I stopped at some lights the temp went straight up to 100 degrees and then steam came from under bonnet luckerly end of my road so when I got back the top of the radiator had burst open and all mayo in the oil cap and ran like a bag of nails
Am I right stating head gone as I replaced the radiator and still same .

Mayo in the oil filler can often just be a result of short trips or blocked breathers.

Clearly, it's overheated, but overheating when coming to a stop is more indicative of a cooling fan failure or possibly a dead thermostat.

To definitively diagnose a head gasket failure I would try a compression / leakdown test, or pressurise the cooling system and see if there's any evidence of water getting into any of the cylinder.

Kev beat me to it.

I'd say compression test and chemical block test (sniff test) before parting with any more money.

I've had a small leaking radiator but kept the water topped up.
I had water from the exhaust and partner said some smoke came out.
He car runs rough like I said .plus I noticed both radiator pipes used to get that hot you could not touch them and they were solid when touched .

If it was running rough then ok ,i would say head gasket has gone,as mine did that, and its not a big job either.

Just out of curiosity. Can you say what The coolant history is ...  :y
What i mean by the question is. Have you any idea if the coolant system has been neglected at anytime IE weak mixture/just water.

Was thinking if a 2.2 (Like Tunnies) is treated proper from the beginning with the proper mixture & Amount going in,Would the 2.2 Head gasket problem not happen,or is it just the way the 2.2s Are.  :-\ :-\ :-\ Think tunnies 2.2 has done well over the 100 000 and never had HG issues.

To be fair recently with the small leak I've just been topping it up with just water. The car has done 146 thousand so done well .

It depends how its been looked after, when i brought the frontera,i was told the hg had been done several years ago,but i still changed coolant after i got it,but then hg went all of a sudden, when i replaced it ,it felt like the head bolts wasnt tightened correctly, ive replaced everything and has been fine since. At the end of the day anything can fail on a car on matter how well its maintained.

I would say abuse of coolant and ran on water would knacker it over time  :y Took a head off a Vectra that was abused an the waterways were knackered as well as the head gasket  :(
