Starter motors, and testing coil packs...
« on: 26 April 2015, 19:45:23 »

New one is being a problem child - firstly, its taking a few attempts to get the starter to, well, start - ignition off and on three or four times with only a click, before it goes "oh, hang on, he wants something" and starts. Sticky starter? Battery is healthy as can be.

Secondly, Ive done the scuttle reseal job, but I think I was too late and have fried another coil pack - before I buy another one, are there any tests I can do with a meter? Its showing misfires on pot 4. Having had the water in the plug wells, is there a good method to clean the remaining rust and gunk deposits? I'm loathe to spray anything down there that might cause a short...

Oh, also, are all starters created equal, or do I need to compare any connections? Its a 2002 3.2 manual...

Literally had new plugs yesterday - was missing like a bugger as we came up the road last week.

Coil pack is from a breaker, its done maybe 80 miles, but this was before sealing the scuttle...

Hmmm. Are we into dodgy loom territory ?

Loom plug ok? Injector ok?

No other codes I take it...?

Can't believe two coil pacs, one old and one new, would behave exactly the same.

Should probably organise my thoughts before posting. The coil pack currently fitted went on when I collected the car about a fortnight ago - major scuttle leak killed the last one. I drained the water and dried it up, but didn't have time to seal the scuttle until yesterday.
Coil pack fitted was from an Ebay breaker, GM, but unknown condition. I'm wondering if there was some rust or detritus left that is causing a problem in pot 4, hence wondering what to clean it out with - electrical contact cleaner perhaps? Would also like to test the coil pack before sourcing another from OOF...

Just for clarity.Has 0304 been constant throughout? Or just on this particular coil PAC?

No idea on testing, sorry. Me no good with sparks.

It could be coincidence that both used coil packs have the same fault... To be sure replace with new and report back...

If the new one behaves the same then you're into loom territory :-\
