Sensor-question?
« on: 12 July 2007, 12:46:55 »

I read alot about crank sensor's and cam sensor's and knock sensor's. Is there any where on the site that explains what they all do and what effects may be experienced if one of them goes.

Crank, Cam and Knock sensors provide information for the ECU to enable
it to control the Fuel and Ignition to provide optimal settings for all conditions.

Crank Sensor gives the Speed and Position of the Crankshaft.

Cam Sensor gives Speed and Position of Exhaust Camshaft.

Knock Sensor provides information on any Pre-ignition (Pinking) conditions.
ECU can therefore advance/retard ignition to allow for any variance
in the Fuel Rating.

If any sensor gives an unexpected reading, ie Voltage and/or Resistance,
the ECU will default to some base values to give a get you home 'Limp' mode,
and put on the warning light on your dashboard display to inform you of a fault.

This is just a basic reply, but hope it helps.  :)

Here is the link that will take you to the FAQ board.  There are several excellent threads about the sensors by MarksDTM.  These will tell you all you need to know. :)
