A/C is it working properly
« on: 02 May 2007, 20:35:45 »

My air con only goes cold when in ECO mode which i thought it meant the compressor was turned off is this ok???

Also when set to low even after about an hour the air coming out is cool no were near as cold as it should be or has been on previous cars. Is this normal its definatley cooled air thought so the system is working.

I checked the pressure using one off them halfords can things and it showed it was just out off the red (High), so there is pressure in the system and im happy its full. But would a faulty compressor cause the system not reaching a cold temprature?? or is this normally and just me??

ECO should normally disable the air con.

Have a look under the bonnet in each mode. When the air con is running you should see the outer pulley of the air con compressor spinning (there are a couple of cylindrical weights on the end which you can easily see when it's running. In addition, the two auxiliary fans in front of the radiator should be running. If it doesn't run in either mode, it could be that one of the pressure switches has disabled the compressor due to failure of the switch, too low or too high system pressure.

Having established in which mode it's actually running you should feel the high pressure pipework getting hot (pipe between compressor and condenser in front of radiator) and the low pressure side getting cool (upper of the two pipes going back into the passenger compartment).

Next thing to check is that the heating water is being cut off. Go for a reasonable run with maximum cooling selected and then, with the engine still running, check the temperature in the pipes to the heater matrix, which you can see if you remove the trim panel above the driver's feet. These should be cold or, at least, not at coolant temperature. If this is not the case I'd suspect the Heater Bypass Valve.

If none of this bears fruit it's best to get a specialist to look at the actual refrigerant circuit.

I had an older Omega and was very happy with the basic aircon, it was blowing cold air and that's about it... the new one has these fancy 'climate' but in the 5 years I owned it I never really mastered it... seems to have a mind of its own.

I, too, tried 'fixing' it with the Halfords kit only to discover the pressure was high anyway, I tried resetting the servos which made no difference, and I even complained to Vx that it wasn't working properly only to told that they 'couldn't fault it'... so when I want aircon I just put in LO and set the fan speed to the highest... in short I don't think your aircon is faulty in the sense that they are all like that - maybe others here had better experiences.

Mine works as expected, though prefacelift...

Well, for one thing, how do you switch on the climate on a facelift? the answer is by pressing the OFF button... and it just goes downhill from there...

I must admit, for all the complexity that climate control adds with the plethora of buttons and sensors, I find it a pain in the @rse.

If the car is 2 degrees C away from the temperature I have selected it doesn't bother me that much. It'll warm up / cool down when I'm on my way. What does bother me is that the system decides I'm about to suffer from frostbite / sunstroke and whacks on maximum fan through the face vents in an atttempt to correct the situation before it's too late.

Give me a knob to adjust temperature, a knob to select where to send the air, and a knob to select how much air, and I'm happy. All climate does is to make these interdependant so I'm constantly juggling them to get comfortable.

I totally agree.  Much as I love my facelift (on my second now), the climate control annoys the hell out of me.  I usually set it to low with fan on 1 or 2 when I need to keep cool.  Otherwise I have to keep messing with the temp control every poxy five minutes.

I much prefer my old M reg elite that I owned years ago for temp controls!!!!  Why do they always change things that aren't broken?  Who likes the new signal/wash wiper controls on the new vectra/astra/corsas?  Pain in the ar5e!!!!

My parents have just bought a new Corsa. Went out with my Dad driving the other day. He's deaf, by the way, so unlikely to hear the indicators ticking.  ::) Every time he turned the turn signals had automatically cancelled way before he actually made the manoevre, and he was none the wiser.

You're right. There's nothing wrong with a normal indicator stalk and, frankly, if you can't be bothered to hold the stalk on for a couple of seconds before changing lanes on the motorway (only advantage of the new ones AFAIK) you probably aren't going to bother to indicate anyway.

Now, when they have developed a stalk that works telepathically it should be standard fitment on all BMWs.  ;)  Until then why bother?

I kinda live lan changing indicators.  You just have to remember to push the stalk all the way if you want normal indicators - no different from standard indicators, only the gentle push flashes 3 times, rather than for as long as you hold, thats all...
