Changing oil in automatic gearbox (3.2 V6)
« on: 16 May 2011, 23:26:50 »

Hi there,

long time no see :D (touch wood)

I have no probs with my omega, but I need to change oil in my auto box. I know how to do it, but I don't have a pit and no facilities.

Do you know how much the vauxhall garage charges for this? What's the "labour time" according to their... documentation?

...or do you think I can manage without a pit? :P

Thanks for any advice.

I done the job with a copy of the maintenance guide, a trolley jack, axle stands, and a willingness to not pay main dealer prices.

Otherwise, its upto you!!   :y

Waiting for a quote from the vauxhall garage. If it's any good I'll go for it, because otherwise I would have to buy all these stands etc. But we'll see ;)

You only need axle stands, which you can probably borrow. Its straightforward, if messy, after that. :y

Maybe also worth while idea to get the Auto trans filter changed at the same time if you're changing the oil, especially if you don't know when it was last done.

If your going the DIY route, here the link which should help you out on that score (Jpat), helpful and cheaper than dealer.

Right, as far as I'm concerned there is two ways for changing oil. Static and dynamic..
The guy from vauxhall garage says that they would only be able to change max 60% of oil which means static way to me, and is unacceptable. The guy meant to call me back with the price and guess what - he never called... so I might just do it myself.

Anybody knows a good online store with gaskets and filters? :) and oil?

Yep, that's right because you cannot easily get the fluid out of the torque convertor.

Ok, so according to this catalogue, what part would I need?
Gaskets, filter, oil. Anything else?

I have another question though. My box makes a little rattling noise when put on R or D. Not sure whether it is the gearbox or something totally different and not related to the box, but it's worrying me :(

it may be worth checking that the torque converter is securely bolted to the drive plate while you are underneath doing the oil, also look closely at the driveplate as they can crack around the fixing bolts

Right, I have the parts now (£55 delivered), all I need is oil. Can you recommend good online store?

heard not great reports on the Comma.

OOF reccommended fluid is Fuchs Titan 4000 from OPIE oils, or other supplier.

I used Comma, it's been there for the past few years with no ill effects & the car is mostly used for towing these days.  :y

I had read a thread on here way back about syphoning pumps. Well I purchased one on ebay and had used that to drain all the gearbox oil out of the sump before removing. Cant send toy a pic of it as my son accidentely threw it out. When replacing the gearbox oil get litre bottles and go to your local DIY place and get a piece of tubing. Connect to your litre bottle and you will find you can refill it a lot easier and saves a lot of mess.

Something like this

That's how I filed mine, but the bloody tube fell out of the gearbox & I ended up with oil over my drive.  ;)
